Cardassian Sunrise... (Extremely Minor Spoilers)

Kirk the Jerk

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Forgive me if most of this has been discussed before but i'd like to know:
  • How does Uhura know what a Cardassian Sunrise is? She orders two in the bar at the beginning of the film. I'm pretty sure, and correct me if i'm wrong, that Cardassians weren't known of until TNG?

Differant timeline, in this one humans made contact with the cardassians in the unfilmed 5th season of ENTERPRISE.:D

Was it ever actually established onscreen when the Federation made first contact with the Cardassians? I don't think it was... therefore its fine.

After the Ferengi incident Captain Archer made sure to get the Cardassian's name but in a strange twist of fate forgot to record any details of the race after first contact.

No, they weren't seen until TNG. They had contact with the Vulcans by the 22nd century.
23rd century, anyway. DS9's "Destiny" contained a reference to a Cardassian poet living in exile on Vulcan and meeting Tobin Dax there, at some time prior to 2245.

Of course, there wouldn't necessarily have to be anything authentically Cardassian about the drink. It could just have sounded like a cool name to the bartender who invented it.

It's never been established when humans first heard of or met Cardassians.

They weren't invented until TNG, which is an entirely different matter.

I agree with the consensus that although we didn't see them until TNG and DS9 there's no reason to believe contact hadn't been made prior to this. There's no on screen dialogue telling us when first contact was made.

In the TNG episode "Ensign Ro," Captain Picard mentions that he first studied the Bajoran culture in his 5th grade reader. This would suggest that the Bajorans were known to Feds for a very long time, and Bajor and Cardassia are in the same sector of space.

Cardassia must have been exploring some areas similar to what Earth was exploring in the 22nd century, as the planet the Organians were using to study various lifeforms in "Observer Effect" had already been visited by Cardassians before the NX-01 reached it. There was also a Cardassian body among those fueling the alien space station in "Dead Stop." So it's plausible that the Federation was aware of, and might have even had contact with, the Cardassians sometime in the latter half of the century.

Yeah of all the things to get pissed off at, this isn't one of them. It's definitely NOT a canon violation AT ALL!
