Captain Tuvok

Makarov

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Did anyone else find it disturbing in Resolutions how the crew practically mutinied against Tuvok? They seemed like they were on the verge of storming Tuvok's quarters and giving him a beat down. If I was Tuvok I'm not sure I could trust fellow crewmembers knowing they would mutiny against me if I took command. I know they wanted to save the captain but they didn't have to disrespect him in the process... they should all be court martialed IMO.

If Tuvok had court-martialed everybody-- unlikely, since it's doubtful there were three command level officers available as required for one-- he wouldn't be able to get the ship home by himself with everyone locked in their quarters.

I agree with teacake. Also I know Tuvok was only following Janeway's orders but sometimes you have to break those orders to do what is right. I'm glad they finally made Tuvok see reason, by sending in Kes! Seriously, that Ocampa can persuade anyone to listen. Remember Tuvix?

This is Star Trek. Mutiny is only a bad thing when you're a jerk about it. ;)

Tuvok did the same thing in that episode where they black market traded for the super-teleporter. Pretty much everybody was committing mutiny left and right in Voyager.

In the blackmarket situation Tuvok just went behind her back, to spare her the tough decision. He also owned up to it and took a verbal lashing afterwards.

In this situation the crew was getting in Tuvok's face and directly bullying him into agreeing. Then after they get what they want, they're satisfied and no one is disciplined. I would have liked to see Janeway beat them down the same way for disobeying the person she put in charge.

And Tuvok refused to sit next to Neelix because he'd had nightmares about life in the same body every night since.

As part of the memorial service program a photo is requested of Tuvok and Neelix embracing, to let people reflect on that which was lost and that which was saved.

I don't consider that to be practically mutiny. It should have followed a more logical command structure. With Janeway and Chakotay on the planet, Paris was First Officer. Chakotay would often come to Janeway giving feedback and suggestions for courses of action. And it is the responsibility of the First Officer to offer analysis and alternatives.

Kim flew off the handle and committed insubordination, but not mutiny. Once others began to show Kim support, the group chose someone who they thought Tuvok would listen to. One way or the other, Tuvok would likely have to address the crew, which was his responsibility as Captain. If he decided not to contact the Vidians, I don't know what the next step would have been, but they were still a few steps from a mutiny.

My issue with Tuvok in this episode is despite his experience, he seems rather incompetent in dealing with the repercussions of their situation. Despite his being a Vulcan, he had been in Starfleet for many years and had opportunity to observe Captains and commanding officers dealing with tough situations. Just because he isn't emotional himself doesn't mean he doesn't have emotional awareness and the ability to take steps to resolve emotional issues.

I only have Seasons 1 and 7, and a few other episodes on Fan Collectives, so memory is faulty on this subject.

But does Tuvok ever spend much time in the captain's chair?

Even Kim spent time in that chair. In Tuvok's case both Janeway and Chakotay were gone. He was the captain for the rest of the voyage, until they went on a quest for a cure that almost turned Voyager into an organ bank.

Yeah, but I think I saw Harry in that chair more often than Tuvok, if we consider all episodes.

Tuvok seemed to be more content playing with the tactical console, displaying differing ranges of puzzlement. Perhaps he was just humoring Harry by allowing him to pretend to be in command.
