Captain Sulu's Excelsior Crew

<Cross posted from Writing Forum. Mods- please delete if not appropriate>

I am thinking up an entirely self-promotional novella about my Vulcan origins. It takes place during the movie era when Sulu is a Captain. Aside from TUC is there any indication in novels or popular fan lit of who the crew was, and where any of the TOS characters were?

I'm not asking you to do my research for me, and will be wiling to buy and read the original sources if you can point me in the right directions.

You mean, your character's Vulcan origins, do you not? Sorry, just had to bust your chops there a bit! -- RR

But one would assume she grew up on the Excelsior.
Nope. The idea of families on starships didn't hit vogue until the Galaxy class ships. And the novels haven't assumed she spent much time with Dad either.
Is that established on-screen? I know Picard believes he's not good with children (apparently unaware that when he actually tries he is rather skilled), but that's not quite the same thing.

No one ever said in TOS that families were specifically banned from starships, but certainly Picard's reaction to the idea of children on a Starfleet starship, in "Encounter at Farpoint", would seem to suggest that it's quite a novelty, made possible by the Galaxy class' size and its generally being longer-term missions.

However, the premise of TNG changed after "Farpoint". The ship was originally going to be away from Earth UFP space for about ten years. One of the reasons families were encouraged.

I don't think there's any onscreen mention of it being forbidden to have families aboard TOS or TFS ships, no.

"Balance of Terror" mentions a marriage that is going to deprive the ship of at least one of the marrying partners, but there's no clear indication that this would be because spouses are banned from starships.

"And the Children Shall Lead" never raises the issue that children would be out of place aboard a starship.

"The Cage" shows two youngsters in civilian clothing walking the corridors, never paying any attention to Captain Pike or even showing that they would recognize him.

All the missions of the movie ships are of such a short duration that having family aboard would seem unnecessary and unlikely. That is, save for Sulu's ST6 mission that involved at least three years of sniffing gases - but Demora would have been in the Academy anyway, and there's nothing to say Sulu's wife wasn't actually aboard. (For all we know, he married Janice Rand.)
