Captain Scott in III?

Alright ... so there's no real explanation.
Chalk it up to a producer's oversight. That was simple. ;-)

Maybe the promotion was taken away after the theft, then given back after the trial.

If Scotty's still wearing the Commander insignia on the bridge of the Enterprise at the end of ST IV, then all I can say is, sometimes paperwork takes a while to sign, fill out, yadda, yadda, and only moves as fast as it is considered a priority. Unfortunately, I know this first hand.

Maybe the paperwork would have arrived faster if they used subspace communications, rather than shooting the papers through the comapratively slow galactic vacuum tube network. ;)

Costuming screw up...Like Siko having the no of pins for a Cmdr after being made Captain once.

Adding to the confusion, didn't Scotty identify himself as a Commander to the Enterprise computer when they set the self-destruct? Though, you could just say that the computer hadn't been updated since they got to spacedock, which is why it still thinks Scotty is chief engineer of the Enterprise and Chekov is still acting science officer.

to me the self destruct seemed set to Captain, Chief Engineer and Science Officer, last time I ever really gave it any thought it was because the one and only other time we saw it was TOS and they had the exact same commands.

Otherwise wouldnt it have made more sence for Chekov to e acting Navigation or Weapons officer?

Why not to Chekov as first officer? We know he was qualified to be first officer for starships at all in the previous movie, and did see him left in charge in The Final Frontier too, after all.

Yes that is another thing that could have happened, my point is the original Enterprise self destruct seems to be set by 3 persons, this being (from the 2 times we saw the procedure)

[*]Captain
[*]Science Officer
[*]Chief Engineer

This is obviously different to later series where it changes between;

[*]2 officers commonly in TNG, DS9 & VOY, normally the Captain & First Officer
[*]3 officers, noteably in First Contact
[*]1 as seen in an episode of VOY and NEM where the Captain attempts to activate the destruct but fails.
