Captain Picard commanded how many ships ?

A quick search online suggests that this ship was a science variant akin to Sisko's USS Saratoga.

Just out of curiosity:

-"Search online"? Isn't this derived from material in the book, then?
-Sisko's ship was a science variant? Who says? (MJ Friedman in Saratoga, perhaps?)

I seriously need to get The Buried Age. In softcover, as soon as that becomes available here without the trouble of specifically ordering it. Yes, I'm that stingy and lazy.

Thanks for the comments on The Buried Age, folks!

For the record, Picard's specific lines about Tasha in "Legacy" are:

"The first time I saw Tasha Yar, she was making her way through a Carnelian mine field to reach a wounded colonist. Her ship had responded to their distress call, as had mine. When it was all over, I requested that she be assigned to the Enterprise. Her ship's captain owed me a favor. In the months that followed, she never once failed to put the safety of the crew before her own."

So there's nothing in his actual lines there about being in command of any other ship. Clearly it was either just before or just after he took command of the E-D. For Buried Age, I decided it was just before (which required me to make the Carnelians and their minefield part of the climax of the book). At the time, in the book, he was in command of a task force, but not of a specific ship. (And the earlier Portia mission was classified, which is why it was never mentioned.)

USS Excelsior said:
In the episode where he was reduced to being a 12 year old he said that he's been serving on starships for 30 years, and he's not about to sit behind the desk.

Implying he never had a desk job while in Starfleet.

This is true, but a desk job is pretty broad. It just means he didn't have a permanent bureaucratic assignment sitting behind a desk on a planet or Starbase. He could have been a diplomat, a first officer, a spy, who knows?
