Captain Marvel (2019)

Fortunately this movie does not look like it will be bad. Unless you are one of those people who already decided it was going to be bad and nothing will change your mind, then it will be bad no matter how much everyone else likes it.

It may not be as good as some people expect but I really doubt this is going to be their first real flop either.

But to what extent are they different because we, as a society, train them to be different from birth?

That's kind of a polarizing question and where you stand on it will largely determine where you stand in this thread. I doubt anyone is going to change anyone's opinions. It would be nice to exchange ideas without ad hominem insults, especially considering the way the unbecoming way the mods take sides and pile on the way they do.

There's nothing polarizing about the question of what degree nurture plays a role in behavior differences between the sexes. But I can see, for example, that people who are anti-intellectual would have a problem with people learning how the world works.

We were all going to get together at the Secret Mod Lair this past weekend to plot how we were going to pile-on to you in the Captain Marvel thread, but then we realized, who the hell cares?

People just disagree with you on this issue. It's not a pile-on, it's not a conspiracy we all worked out in advance, it's just several people on their own thinking that you are wrong. Imagining that there must be some kind of superfriends team up opposing you because your positions are just so unassailable is part of the problem.

And cut it out with the mods aren't supposed to have passionate opinions or participate in heated discussions crap. You've done that to me and others before. We're here to enjoy and participate in the conversations too just like everyone else. This isn't my forum or Possum's or 1001001's, and we're not conducting mod business, so don't try and leverage it against us.

You mean you don't have a secret hangout to plot and plan how to trigger people??

I'm so excited for April with Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones (and I'm going on vacation early in that month too) I keep forgetting this is even out so soon. I'm going to see it on Friday though and still very looking forward to it.

Buttttt.... I am kinda more looking forward to seeing a certain someone's review on here afterwards just for the laughs :D

I really think we would not be seeing these threads predictably shoot off into 50-100+ page dumpster fires again and again and again if the mods were more sincere in their dedication to civility rather than feeling entitled to selectively indulge in petty online drama. And there's an obvious difference between having an opinion and lobbing an insult. There is also a trollish passive-aggressive streak at play. For instance, Locutus' avatar image seems intended to troll Trek purists. I've seen him use that avatar in its larger form to deliberately mock them. You can't whack a hornet's nest with a baseball bat one moment and then put the referree hat on and expect them to not try to turn around and sting.

IMHO, if a mod is playing "off-duty police officer" they should be smacked down by the on-duty police officers when they start swinging below the belt. I see no evidence of this. I'm not even sure there's a mechanism for mods to issue warnings or ban other mods. Also, mods can't be put on ignore, so there's no getting around that being a mod offers the perks of immunity and a bully-pulpit, both of which may be the reason why some choose to volunteer in the first place.

I'm not going to belabor the point but this is my collective observation after having been here for many years. I know damn well questioning things like this risks being given a warning but like I said, if there's any interest in preventing flamewars (which is what mods are supposed to do) then it would pay to listen to some feedback.

WELL said.
