His influence lives on, in that he still continues to inspire ‘true’ fans to be a fucking nuisance.

    ———-

Oh, and his legacy apparently now includes ‘being a failed attempt twist around ‘Youre fave is problematic,’ used by try-hards who lack the capacity to understand why people care about that sort of thing in the first place.’

Honestly, it’s probably what Gene would have wanted.

Some fans are still like that.

With some fans it's almost like he was a religious figure. I wish I could've seen him at a convention, but that's about it. He made a show I like, but wasn't the guiding hand he liked to claim he was. He's interesting, but that's about it. It maybe a generational thing. He was long dead by the time I figured out who he was.

Roddenberry died I think 2 years before I became a fan. I don't think I ever really had any hero worship for him and I also found it frustrating as DS9 fan that many fans didn't give it a chance because it was to dark and " it didn;t go anywhere. Which never made sense to me. Every "TNG" episode the Enterprise would be somewhere different, technically, but most of the stories were told on the same ship ever week, same sets so people don't "actually go anywhere in Trek because they use the exact same standing sets ever week. Why does the setup of the story mean so much. Let's not also forget that almost no other tv shows on tv are set on a spaceship or even what one could call a road show. Usually it's the same location every week for ever show out their. "Twin Peaks" was just fine even though it never explored the greater Oregon region every week.

For me, DS9 felt like the closest in spirit to TOS out of all the spin offs.

I won't be seeing Captain Marvel until next week. I doubt it will disappoint as even the worst of the MCU has been entertaining to watch.

I haven't seen it yet either. A recent car wreck and broken arm has gotten the way of that. Hopefully sometime this week though.

There's surprisingly little pain. I had surgery, but my doctor is the best in the region and did a great job. I should make a full recovery.

None of us would be posting on a Trek board without Roddenberry. It's as simple as that.

We'd just be posting on a Star Wars board or Firefly if we were lucky.

Would Star Wars or Firefly exist without Star Trek? Serious question.

IDK. There have been many terrible people who have affected the course of history. I don't think I need to thank them, even if what they did shaped my life.

Hope you get better, @Awesome Possum .

Alien and Planet of the Apes did far more, I'd say. Heck, 2001 well before either of those was far more influential. That said, it's a good topic for Gen Trek.

Yes, how can you be so sure that without Star Trek he would have made Star Wars absolutely identical? Or that he would have done it? Heck, without Star Trek on TV, he might have played more with his friends and started cultivating an interest in Baseball, then becoming a coach or something.

ETA, good suggestion about Gen Trek. Or the Star Wars subforum...? :shifty:

Because, Star Wars has far more in common with serial space operas like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. It came out years before TMP back when Trek fans were mostly comic fodder. Better say Star Wars alerted typically conservative studios to dust off forgotten properties like Star Trek.
