Captain Kirk and the HMS Truculent - An Alternative Reality Story

Ah, crap. That won't be good. The banter with Spock/McCoy was great. The threat Mitchell represents is extreme, I'm thinking. If he was a close friend of Kirk's he could give Tracey enough to hang Kirk with.

Very interesting indeed.

Let's hope that Mitchell doesn't know as much about Kirk as he thinks he does, or we could be in for one hell of a ride.

Good to see the 'trio' gelling in this universe as well. :D

So, Gary Mitchell is sticking the proverbial knife in Jim Kirk's back, eh? I wonder if it's money prompting him to talk or if there was some kind of falling out between the two men.

As always, wonderful stuff, and I'm eagerly awaiting the coming battle.

I like how these familiar characters keep popping up in re-invented incarnations of themselves. That's adds a lot of spice to this already fascinating tale.

:cardie:

How the bloody hell did I miss this until just now?

I've just downloaded the entire thing to date and look forward to catching up with the rest of you.

A fantastic chapter - great to see the Fantastic Three coming together with the usual banter and dry wit from McCoy. I love the fact that you have Spock unshaven, with long hair and smoking cigarettes - what a way to spin the familiar character.

Gary Mitchell turning up like that right at the end really spun things in a way I wasn't expecting.

Can't wait to see where this goes!

I like this a lot! You capture what I imagine to be the atmosphere of the empire on which the sun never set (literally in this case!) very well!

R.

I say again ... :cardie:

and I mean that in a GOOD way.

Who the hell are you and where the hell is that brain of yours?

And I mean THAT in a good way.

There are all kinds of things I'd like to say, but most of them have probably already been said.

What I do HAVE to say is that this is a wonderfully original idea, and exhibits an amazingly evocative mix of the completely new and unique with just the right elements of the familiar to make this story and this new universe immediately accessible.

I know I probably gush too much over all your work that you share with us here on TBBS, and my praise of all your other works is completely genuine. That having been said, this may be your most impressive work yet. It's just so original and so compelling. I literally can't wait to see what you come up with next.

I think I need a drink. Reading all that all at once seems to have worn me the hell out. ;)

I only started reading this a few days ago and am enjoying it very much, I do have two minor nits however,

1st.) The title should more correctly be ~ Captain Kirk and HMS Truculent, HMS standing for Her Majesty's Ship. The 'the' really doesn't belong. Using the words instead of the initials and it becomes quickly obvious. Captain Kirk and the Her Majesty's Ship Truculent. Although you could also call it Captain Kirk and the Truculent. But clearly HMS or the has to go.

2nd.) Contrary to what you may have heard, there was a great deal of sympathy for the American cause in England among the average man-on-the-street. Hanging the rebels would have had a drastic effect back in Britain with uprisings that would likely have crippled the government. A more realistic way to get the world you seem to be looking for would have been with a negotiated settlement that allowed the American colonies to send full delegates to Parliament as full members, not merely observers or guest speakers.

As I said the nits were pretty minor. On the whole this is an excellent re-working of TOS in a new setting. Please keep it up.

I don't usually go for alt-universe stories...But this is, well, so excellent as to be difficult to describe.

I forgot to ask but is the Sino-Japanese Alliance suppost to be this reality's version of the klingons? And is Emperor Chang base off of General Chang from Star Trek VI?

Penta - Thank you! :)

Hartzilla2007 - Only in the sense that they are the major antagonists to the Royal Starfleet. There are alien races out there - possibly Klingons and Romulans - but they are not central to this story. Emperor Chang is Chinese and has no connection with the Klingon General Chang.

soon?????

I hate making promises I can't keep, but I think perhaps - yes, soon. I've developed the story behind "Black Day," that I hope will make heads explode. Just need to get Kirk and HMS Truculent into the fray against Captain Tracy and his marauders.

In the meantime, I'm working on a story at Ad Astra entitled, "What's Upp? The Saga of Elvis Upp." Yes, it is a United Trek story. Yes, it is rather strange. Also need to get back to "Dragon's Slayd," "Steel-Edged Grace," "The Endurance of Jesse Yeager," not to mention the in-progress Bluefin and Pamlico stories. Too many irons in the fire, you say? Naaah! I'm just a serial procrastinator with a touch of attention deficit disord . . . Tribble! ;)
