Captain Janeway

I think that it can be hard to write Janeway, given that she is an Admiral, and gives orders to lesser officers that are likely written to be correct.

whew, Resistance has finally arrived at my doorstep, I read it in one go and I think Janeway was way out of character.

The "real" Janeway would have supported Picard. At the very least, she wouldn't have been babbling of court martials after the crisis was resolved and he had been proven right. She was affected by a serious case of Nechayevite Syndrome this time around (actually, after what happened in the "A Time To" series I believe Nechayev would have supported Picard) and frankly I can't believe the brass still can't trust Picard especially when the Borg are involved. I mean, a Jellico being a jerk about it, I can take and believe but not Janeway. Whatever you think of the character, it just doesn't fly with her own obsessiveness about the Borg.

At the very least, the "real" Janeway would have jumped in the shuttle with Seven to reach the Enterprise, commandeering some super duper experimental new craft to get there in time or something like that.

I hope there's a reason, not yet apparent, for Janeway's behaviour. I'd hate it if she's used as just another annoying admiral needed to complicate the life of the Heroic Captain. Anyone can do that. It doesn't seem very likely, though, so I'm not really worried :)

Before Dishonor is giving her at least one POV scene, so maybe that will be more in line with what you're looking for. I don't remember her being bad in Death in Winter, but I do agree that her Resistance appearance could have used some improvement.

Yeah, so could I.

Maybe, but you may not be able to live with what actually *does* happen to her in Before Dishonor. I won't say any more, for fear of spoilers.

FWIW, I think she's completely in character in her brief appearance in Q & A. :)

Absolutely. As I said in my review, she is as inconsistent in the books as she is in the TV series: There are times when I really respected and liked her. At other times she was the complete opposite.

"Equinox" should have be more than enough to get her court martialed. I don`t remember which episode it was (I only watched most of the Voyager episodes once) but punishing a crew member by not only putting him in the brig but also in solitary confinement is also a court martial offence.

These are the worst examples that come to my mind right now but I remember there were numerous occasions when Janeway did or said things I had problems with.

I am very disappointed that the first female captain as the main character of a Star Trek TV series was handled so badly at times. She is not a good role model at all. I certainly don`t want to show my young daughter a captain with the attitude that you can`t have a relationship with a real flesh and blood being when you are a captain and all you are allowed is a so-called sentient hologram. I am sure, if Janeway would have been a man, things would be different.

Well... Enough of that.

You may be right about Janeway's character in general, but not about her only having a relationship with a hologram.

She wasn't able to have a relationship with another member of her crew... it had nothing to do with whether or not they were flesh and blood. Totally putting aside Mark, she had relationships with other flesh and blood when she could, like the xenophobic inspector from "Counterpoint" (although it was obviously a deceptive one) and the guy on Quarren or whatever it was called when she had her memories altered.

Captain Kira Nerys of Deep Space Nine and the USS Defiant (post Unity).
