CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

What do the people behind the Ultimate U have against wings on Cap's cowl?
They're really silly looking and serve no function whatsoever.

I like Cap's 616 outfit, for the record, but I'm not surprised they chose to leave the wings off; some things just wouldn't look very good in live action.
So the wings are decorative, not utilitarian. What's wrong with decorative? Superhero costumes aren't always designed for practicality.
The point of the Ultimate Universe generally was practical (or the sort of thing that feels practical); so the wings were out.

I'm sure the wings will be on Cap's less utilitarian, more frivolous USO costume.

Of course. They've made him a clown. As he gets more serious he gets farther away from looking like he does in the comics. Also farther away from being identified with America.
Truth. Justice. All that other stuff.
No faith in the source material.

On the other hand, one has to remember that the helmet wings look normal to us because we've been staring at them in the comics all our lives. They probably look a lot sillier to someone who isn't used to them . . . like most of the target audience.

Not really, no.

You REALLY need to let go of this "total adherence to the comics" stuff. All that matters is being true to the spirit of Cap, which is what they're doing anyways.

Erm, his costume is still pretty unmistakeably American; it's just more realistic.

If the character is intended to be a WWII Symbol of America, I think it more realistic that he'd be wearing the Stripes on his uniform instead of red Suspenders, and he'd at least have the wings painted along the sides of his army-style helmet. Purely decorative, yes, but so are most symbols.

I think the government's propaganda department wouldn't have hesitated to make it as flashy as possible, rendering "Captain America" as a literal flag in the shape of a man, with the wings to top it off.

Our national bird is the eagle. Thor's helmet has wings and does the Flash. What purpose do they serve? And why does something thats pure decoration need a purpose?

The could go with the explanation DC used for Flash. There he had a micro receiver built into the wings to pick up the police band. Could serve a simialr purpose in combat situations.

Marvel had a thing for seemingly useless wings. Like the ones on Namor's ankles.

A great deal of art that emblemizes America includes wings in the design. Particularly that of our armed forces.

Just look at all these:

Note the Shield in the center of these emblems (which Cap's ORIGINAL shield is based on, before he got the round one) and the prominent Wings.

Do you get it yet?

Why don't you think Captain America will be huge in the foreign markets?
I should think that would be obvious. Foreign audiences will in fact consume quite a bit of US patriotic material (see Michael Bay's whole oeuvre), but something as explicitly labelled as Captain America is undoubtedly going to be a turnoff to some. When you say "Captain America", people (even many in the US) think of a diehard Bush supporter, Team America played straight. He's not, but that's the perception, and it will take a very strong marketing campaign to sell it.
The title of this film had been planned to be The First Avenger: Captain America. Immediately, some people here said that this was a wise attempt to downplay the word "America" in the title. Their reasoning? Oh, "America" is a bad word around the world. Too negative. Too imperialistic, etc., etc. I think one would need to lean seriously left to believe all that. I'm not convinced that audiences overseas are going to skip a comic-book movie because the title offends their delicate political sensibilities.

Marvel Studios has restored the title to Captain America: The First Avenger. Maybe they have overcome their own fears of a marketing problem.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I think people are way overthinking whether Cap's stars and stripes motif etc will impact the foreign market. People go see a movie because they hear it kicks ass, regardless of the subject matter. They're just looking for something that will go good with their popcorn.

And remember most foreign markets don't speak English. If the name really is such a problem, it can be re-titled accordingly. Call the guy "Captain Hero," translated into various languages. Nobody is going to care.

Even if Captain America is wonderfully done and intelligent, and does a nice job of translating the themes of the comics to the screen, it will be wasted on 90% of the audience, which is just there to see shit get blowed up real good.

it should do okay since it's mostly set in WW2.

it's more of a question for CA2 - how well will that do if it's set in 2016 with him running around Iraq freeing hostage aid-workers and battling crazed villains in Korea or something?

Caps pretty much stayed out of real wars and conflicts in the comics after he was defrosted. I think they'll fokllow that path. More than enough home grown badguys and warmed over Nazis to keep him busy.

Maybe he can become a self-hating American that blames America for everything bad that happens to America and spends all his time bitching and moaning on the comment sections of news websites. :)
