CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

^ Though I would love if it were shot with that kind of cinematic sensibility, to differentiate it from the crowd of superhero films. I'd also be curious to see what superheroics would look like through that lens.

Unbreakable.

I think Cap looks pretty good in live action:

Ironically, I hated the camerawork in that film (oh, look, a train seat--let's focus on that for the next couple of minutes). The superheroics are also more toned down than what I was thinking; Unbreakable was trying to be realistic, but unless they pull a Nolan on the Invaders' power-set, we'll draw the line at naturalism for Cap.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I think it looks good. The ears convinced me. But I guess it isn't black leather, so it won't fly today.

No more silly than Spider-man, Batman or Superman.
Batman's costume is a poor example to bring up; all of its cinematic versions (apart from Adam West, I guess) are radically different from the comics look. And it is sillier if it's meant to be a soldier's uniform, and it is.

I love the costume on the page, mind you, but what works on the page doesn't always work on screen.

Cap's uniform is meant to be a superheroes' costume. Once Rogers puts on the costume he's no longer a soldier.

As for Batman, the mask and the are pretty much the same as the comics. Those are the most "comic booky" parts of the uniform. Frankly I wish they'd leave the armored look to Iron Man.

The other thing about Cap's costume is it can't be as modern looking as the ones in the Spider-man or Batman movies because it's set in WWII and would have been made with the technology then available. Fair enough, it's a WWII where the USA is advanced enough to develop a super soldier serum but I still think the costume has to look a bit retro.

I must say, as an Irish person who is all in favour of realism in comic-to-movie-adaptations, I wouldn't have a problem with a costume that's authentic to the comics or that has the stars & bars all over it. Plenty of people who might have issues with current US foreign policy still recognise the sacrifice and role the USA played in 'the last good war.'

Then there is the complication that - correctly or incorrectly - the American flag is perceived in some corners of the world as a symbol of arrogance and/or imperialism. So you've got a double hurdle to overcome: younger Americans who may laugh at the uniform, and foreign audiences who may scoff at Cap's All American hero image as a false reflection. Maybe none of this matters to comic book fans, but it does matter to a studio trying to sell tickets to all the non-fan moviegoers.
Marvel needs to ignore all that shit.

Marvel needs to understand Cap as a character. Since they created him, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that score. Then they need to ignore their audience and stay true to their own vision of Cap, and bring that vision to the story.

My hunch is that the veracity of the character will come through for that small percentage of the audience that is looking for something as quaint as "veracity" in a summer blockbuster shoot-em-up. For the 90%+ of the audience that just wants big-ass spolsions, deliver big-ass spolsions. Everyone's happy, the movie's a success, start planning the sequel.

The audience is a bunch of dumb sheep. If Marvel understands that the sheep don't know what they want till they see it in their feeding trough, they'll do just fine.

The way Marvel has been doing their movies ever since Iron Man and Incredible Hulk has given me hope that having their own independent studio allows them more control over their creations when adapting them for the big screen than before when they needed Sony, Fox and Universal.

Also, Avi Arad is out of there which is another good thing.

If Bucky don't get blowed up I'm boycotting this film!!!!!!! ;)

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Former Cap hopeful Sebastian Stan to play Bucky Barnes.

Consolation prize, I guess. Could we be seeing the Winter Soldier for Captain America's second solo film?
Well he did sign for 5 films so it's highly possible that Bucky could be the anchor figure for Cap in the modern day. Of course they'd need to explain why Barnes hasn't aged as well.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

My suspicion is that the five picture deal is just a standard contract they have - there's no guarantee that he'll appear in more than one movie.

They might on the other hand use the character in flashbacks.

If it's the Winter Soldier stuff they're doing, he was put in cryogenic suspension by the Russians on-and-off over the next several decades.

Ed Brubaker approves of the casting, apparently.

That's my hope, too. But I don't see why Bucky is needed for this story, especially not played by a guy who looks like he belongs in a teenage emo vampire flick. :rommie: (He was good in Kings, tho.)

The LA Times says that Marvel has offered the role of Peggy Carter to Emily Blunt, but that she'll probably turn it down.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

She was supposed to be Black Widow, but had to give up the part from a prior movie.

Isn't Alice Eve supposed to also be a candidate for Peggy? She'd do better as Sharon Carter, she looks more like her.

Peggy and Sharon look basically identical (it was even a plot point).
