CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Rumour du jour from The Hollywood Reporter is Marvel having formally offered the part to Chris Evans.

If true, he was a good Johnny Storm, could have been a great one if the material was there for him; I don't know if he can be Steve, but compared to a lot of the other names mentioned, I'd prefer he be given the chance.

Also, for some reason, the article's image of Captain America is the James Barnes Cap.

Somebody who can command a god, a monster, a billionaire playboy and a smartass carny all in one sitting.
So...someone who can command the Breakfast Club? :wtf:

The Marvel equivalent, anyway.

And then, to do it one better, he's gotta take 'em into a Fight to save the world and all that good stuff, once they escape from detention.

"Dear Mr. Fury..."

He never really commanded the Hulk.

It could work if the Hulk had more of that Grey Hulk persona of the early days or the Peter David days. Still volatile, but a character who can be reasoned with to a degree.

At worst, I'm sure Cap can find a way to steer even a rampaging Hulk in a useful direction.

I agree with you, but Evans can play more than just the sarcastic goofball. I wouldn't put him anywhere near the level of Norton or Downey, but I think he'd do fine.

From Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood:

Yes, Marvel Studios made Chris Evans an offer to play Captain America. But I hear that the testing process will continue because the actor is conflicted about jumping into another superhero role, after playing Johnny Storm/Human Torch in two Fantastic Four installments. This could certainly be bargaining table posturing, because Marvel drives the toughest deals in town. But other actors have turned away from big superhero movie roles. They include Heath Ledger, who turned down Spider-Man because he didn't want to be typecast or sign for three movies (he later came back for an Oscar-winning turn as The Joker in The Dark Knight). Josh Hartnett turned down the chance to play Superman several years ago for similar reasons, even though the three-picture pact could have paid him nearly $100 million. Marvel is offering far less, and asking nine options.

Ugh... They went the with the 'safe' casting. Evans could be able to pull it off, although I think he lacks gravitas.

I was hoping for a more interesting choice.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I like Evans, he is a talented actor and a charming guy on the whole, but he doesn't have the right look for me. A little too boyish and that oh-so-maligned 'swimmer's build' that SR's Routh shared simply doesn't impress, especially since Cap's powers come from muscle and bone and not 'magic' or sci-fi technobabble. In this case, if they're gonna have him lift a truck(for example), the guy needs to look like he can lift a truck.

Which Superman version was offered to Josh Hartnett? I can't really picture Superman having a blank look because there's nothing working upstairs.

I think going from 95 pound weakling to height of human perfection in a minute or two by taking a "super-soldier" formula and "vita-rays" qualifies as sci-fi technobabble. ;)

I imagine it won't be a minute or two, but rather they'll suspect it was a failure to begin with but he finds himself suddenly very hungry and with excess energy, etc. etc. and makes the transformation over the course of several weeks, etc. etc. The hulk is by definition wonky on the science because of all that mass coming from nowhere and disappearing constantly, but I imagine they'll go 'plausible' with Cap since his powers are less extravagant and actually within the realm of possibility.

Either way, some heroes are specifically drawn with Evans' build like Spider-man, Daredevil, and -fancy this- Human Torch. On the other side of the line are guys like Superman, Captain Marvel, Thor and Captain America. You never see these guys drawn any smaller than 'superhuman' and to make a point of it, Cap is the only Human of the four so that looks is all the more important to have for him.

The size isn't quite as important as the boyish quality that Chris has brought to everything I've seen him in. As several others in this thread have said: Captain America is a man in every sense of the word. Puppy-dog eyes and pouty lips just don't belong.

Agreed. When I first read it was him, I almost cried. I thought he was a good fit for Johnny Storm because the way he portrayed him is essentially how the character was supposed to be, but I really don't think he can pull off a convincing Captain America.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I assume that working out and the costume might solve the build "problem". Chris Reeve was somewhat scrawny before Superman. The whole "manly man/leader of men" thing might be more problematic. Steve Rogers is a guy in his late teen or early twenties before and after he becomes Captain America. So you'll need to find an actor who looks that age or slightly older who also has a commanding presence. All I know Evans from is the FF movies. No idea if he can pull it off. Though no doubt there were guys in real life who managed it.

Sunshine would be a movie to watch to see Evans basically playing the straight man in an intense situation.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Ironically was frozen in that movie too

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Evans' character in Sunshine was IIRC the only astronaut in the ship with a military background and I think he pulled it off quite well.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I remember seeing Evans in Push on DVD. In the extras, there was an interview with Evans who was talking on his role in that film and that of Johnny Storm. In the interview he says that he loves these kinds of movies, loves playing a role that has super-powers, doing the green screen stuff, he loves it all. So if it comes down to him saying yes or no to this role or some other role where he doesn't get to play a hero, he's going to choose to throw around the shield for a few months.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I think Marvel is ludicrous for demanding a 9 picture commitment. They are going to drive away any really good actor with something like that, particularly someone up and coming and getting critical raves.

Also, I think Marvel is getting a reputation for being a "low-ball" studio, i've heard this before and the article someone posted above alludes to it too.

Evan is BY FAR a better choice than Tatum or Phillipe.
