New has been coming out a bit more regular regarding the The First Avenger: Captain America movie. Now that Iron Man 2 is in post and Thor is headed for principal photography they are ready for casting on Captain America.

Director:
Joe Johnston (Hidalgo, Jumanji, Jurassic ParkIII, Wolfman)

Cast:
Steve Rogers/Captain America:
Agent 13/Sharon Carter:
Nick Fury: Samuel L. Jackson
Hitler: As Himself

"I'd say within the next few weeks we'll have our Captain America."
The First Avenger: Captain America director Joe Johnston told SCI FI Wire that they'll have their Captain America very soon:"We need to cast it soon," Johnston said. "We have a very short list, but we're still juggling actors here. I'd say within the next couple of weeks we'll have ourselves a Captain America, I hope."

He added that the movie is expected to start shooting at the end of June. He said, "We're getting ready to go to the U.K., it looks like." You can read more of the interview here The First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled for a July 22, 2011 release.

Various excerpts from DarkHorizons.com about the scope of the film.
Paired with an indestructible shield, he becomes a symbol of the war effort as he fights Nazis and evil scientists.
Marvel's "Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set "Avengers."

In terms of "Captain America", he confirms that it's an origin story of how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America and will be mostly period albeit with modern, present-day bookends.

Johnston seems most proud of the fact that though the character changes from a scrawny weakling into a human Adonis, he has no superpowers as such. He says "He's an every man who's been given this amazing gift of transformation into the perfect specimen—the pinnacle of human perfection. How does that affect him? What does that mean for him emotionally and psychologically? You'd think he got everything he wanted. Well, he didn't get everything he wanted. The rules change at that point and his life gets even more complicated and dire."

Johnston tells Film Journal they're currently in pre-production in Manhattan Beach with Rick Heinrichs hard at work on the production design. "It's the part of the process that I love the most. We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures... It's that phase of the production where money doesn't matter" says an obviously very excited Johnson.

Presently the plan is to begin the film's action in 1942 & 1943 during the Second World War, and "then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now... The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s comic books we're sort of avoiding."

Will there be a Bucky?
Ground work for Red Skull?

Captain America's shield was seen as an easter egg in the first Iron Man film.

Supposodly his icy body was broken loose in a deleted scene from The Incredible Hulk.

As casting rumors come in till roles get locked down let's use this as the place to keep each other updated as the film unfolds till release.

Just take away the lame "First Avenger" bullshit, and I'll be happy.

I don't know what this means. Can anyone tell us about Captain America in the 1960's and 1970's? What was wrong with them?

What? You don't think this'll make a great companion piece with "The Second Green Lantern: Hal Jordan"? :)

There may be more than one explanation. One I've understood is that during that time Steve was frozen in ice they had other Captain Americas(for the purpose of rationalizing the MU Cap stories). I think they want to avoid confusion and keep it basically Steve Rogers=Captain America.
In the 1970s, the post-war versions of Captain America were retconned into separate, successive characters who briefly took up the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers went into suspended animation near the end of World War II.

Possibly he just means they're relying mainly on the more modern comics for inspiration (by which I'm guessing he means Ed Brubaker (good) and Mark Millar (ehhhh)).

That's a very garbled statement, though, because he makes it sound like they're actually going to the present, when from what he says elsewhere it's all-World War II (apart from a framing sequence).

What is this about him not having super-powers? He has super powers! He has super strength, invulnerability, healing to some degree... doesn't he?!

It depends upon your definition of superpowers. IIRC, the serum gives him peak human physical abilities in all areas. Since they're still human abilities, maybe they're not technically "superpowers". OTOH, if someone gave me a serum that allowed me to run the 100 meter dash in 9 seconds, I'd consider that somewhat "super". Plus, yeah, I did hear that the serum gives him extra endurance and extra healing.

Hair and eye color don't matter. That's what dyes and contact lenses are for . . . .
Don't forget the lense filters. Or do they use CGI for that now?

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

He didn't say anything bad about Cap in the 80s, so maybe they'll use Mark Gurenwald's characterization of him.

How about Chris Hemsworth's brother Liam?

Is Sam Worthington overexposed by now?

Nick Fury: Samuel L. Jackson

Has that been confirmed, though? There has been talk that Jackson might not come back as Fury.
He inked this deal nearly a year ago when Iron Man 2 was going into pre-production.
Samuel L. Jackson is Marvel's man.

The actor, who just weeks ago was seemingly on the outs with the studio over reprising his role as Nick Fury, agent of spy outfit S.H.I.E.L.D., has signed an unprecedented nine-picture deal to play the character in a series of Marvel movies.

The movies include "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "Captain America," "The Avengers" and its sequels.

Also on the table is the possibility of toplining a "S.H.I.E.L.D." movie, which is in development.

I think you just recall the talk of him not returning as Fury(for IM:2) and then *BAM* a few weeks later he signed the above deal. I tried a google search for 'Jackson out as Fury' and similar and the only articles that came up were the ones prior to him signing the 9 pic deal.

Sam is confirmed for sure.
