Capt.'s Stateroom and the Mess Hall

AdmiralSteven

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Hey everyone, I have another one of those "where is it questions." I've been doing a bit of reading on the layout of Voyager and I've read that the Capt.'s stateroom is directly below the bridge, which would put it on deck 2, and I thought I read facing forward. Now, I've just read that the Mess Hall is also on Deck 2, section 13. Wouldn't this put them in approximately the same location? Upon viewing pictures of the ship, I would think that the mess hall is on deck 3, and Janeway's stateroom is on deck 2. Just wondering.

Thanks all.

by 'stateroom' do you mean ready room/office or quarters?
the capt's ready room/office is just off the bridge . . . I have no idea where the quarters would be . . .

as for the mess hall I always assumed they were these huge windows in the notch on the front under the registry light

Yes, I do living quarters. I guess I should have said that instead...didn't mean to confuse anyone. I thought those windows under the registery light was the mess hall as well, but I've been doing some reading and I'm not sure now. Then again, the site I read it from, don't remember now, might have it wrong.

IIRC, those huge windows on deck 3 are the Captain's quarters. The smaller windows on deck 2, are the Mess Hall. Or maybe it's the other way 'round. Either way, there's two sets of windows, one on deck 2, and one on deck 3.

The Messhall is indeed the three main windows directly under the Bridge on Deck 2 and the Captain's Quarters are on Deck 3, directly below the Mess Hall.

that seems like a really exposed position for the Captain's quarters.

Although the proximity does explain why the Kitchen was originally supposed to be the Captain's private dining room. Why exactly she would need a private dining room is beyond me when she has a replicator and a dining area in her quarters.

In the episode "Drive" you can see them on Deck 2 in the mess hall as the crew begins to watch the race. I always thought the mess hall was on deck 3, but after looking at the screen caps on trekcore.com for "Drive" they are clearly on Deck 2. That is a wierd place for the Captain's quarters all exposed on Deck 3.

As to the bolded, my guess is that this is where she would have a meal with various officers and crewmen from time to time...maybe even an admiral or two.

With a private dining room a captain can invite other crewmembers to join her for a meal with some degree of privacy but without violating the privacy of her quarters. It would also be the place to entertain ambassadors, etc.

Of course given their situation that kind of formality went out the proverbial airlock and she ended up using the messhall for formal events (the crew much have been told the mess was closed during those times) and her quarters for crew.

You're right, the mess hall is on the second deck. Oh, and thanks for giving me the name of that site, trekcore.com...very cool site.

I don't think either position is really that exposed. Trek ships don't tend to do that well when their shields are down, period. So, embedding anything deep within the ship probably wouldn't do a lot given the power of Trekverse weapons.

Shatastrophic had it right, Capt. Janeway's quarters is on deck 3 right below the mess hall. I googled Rick Sternbach and found this interview:

Rick Sternbach said:
Where are Captain Janeway's quarters located, the holodecks, Astrometrics?
Marty R.
RS: Captain Janeway lives on Deck 3, right below the Mess Hall, in the only cabin that sports five window bays. The Holodecks are in a few places in the Primary Hull, between Decks 4 and 6. There are likely a few smaller Holodecks in the Engineering Hull, around Decks 11 or 14. Astrometrics is directly beneath the Main Computer core on Deck 8; the minimum distance for the optical fiber paths allows for more efficient sensor data processing.
