Capaldi's Regeneration

Green Lantern

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
We know Capaldi's regenerating at Christmas, and I was wondering what the story would be, so I thought I'd ask the forum. What are you expecting from the story, what do you want from the story? Villains, plot, cause of regeneration, guest characters, time period and so forth.

My main wish list for Capaldi's regeneration would recycle Sylvestor McCoy's regeneration had Doctor Who not been cancelled in 1989, which would have seen him regenerate due to being driven to insanity. I think it's an interesting and unique concept to the show, which would also suit Capaldi's Doctor well. I think the Valeyard returning, to perhaps help trigger this by putting the Doctor through a set of problems would be good, although it's very unlikely to happen, but still.

As for what we can actually expect, I imagine Missy will appear in the episode, whether she will be the antagonist, side character or even pseudo-companion like in The Magician's Apprentice/The Witches Familiar, knowing Moffat probably the latter. I'm hoping we don't get yet another episode with all of the Doctor's enemies like in Time of the Doctor, it's been done to death. With it being Moffat's last episode I imagine he's going to want to say goodbye to some of the hallmarks of his time on the show, so perhaps the Weeping Angels returning isn't out of the question, or maybe even his version of the Stolen Earth/Journey's End where all the companions from his era return (although this is also very unlikely).

I'd like the Weeping Angels to be the main villains, as they're the most representative of Moffat's NuWho monsters and his most defining creation, closely related to the most popular NuWho episode to date. However, I like the idea of the Doctor going insane, but I don't see the BBC allowing for that.

I agree, it'd be a sensible way to send Moffat off, plus we've been sorely lacking Weeping Angels in quite a while.

Depends on the degree really. Or he could at least regenerate for purely mental reasons, nothing physical. Perhaps offered an ultimatum like "regenerate or I'll shoot your companion". Idk what in the story would justify that, but y'know, something along those lines.

How about a adventure with Missy that ends in them regenerating both together?
I don't think we've had that before.
Yeah I could see that, it'd be interesting, maybe they reconcile, maybe the concept of Roger Delago's departure could be used, with the pair reconciling and the Master/Missy ultimately sacrificing themselves for the Doctor, but this time in the form of a regeneration instead of a full death.
I expect Murray Gold's score to be the audio equivalent of "DAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAAAAA HOLY SHIT DAAAAAA DAAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAAAA THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND ALSO SAD DAAAAAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAAAAAAA LOOK AT THIS SHIT MOTHERFUCKERS"
Yep, definitely.

I think Missy's presence is almost inevitable. Not just because of the large presence she's had in The Twelfth Doctor's era and Michelle Gomez confirming that she'll be back next season, but also because The Master has appeared or was involved in some way in five of The Doctor's previous regeneration/final stories (Logopolis, The Caves of Androzani, The Ultimate Foe, the Doctor Who movie, and "The End of Time").

I want his actual death to be sudden & shocking. No big speeches. Give him an excuse to give a big speech earlier in the episode if you have to. But, after Tennant's interminable victory lap and Smith having enough time to make a phone call, eat fish fingers, and give a little speech, I think it's time for a change. I want this one to take the Doctor by surprise and not give him the chance to say more than a few words. Maybe just, "Goodbye."

Well, every actor wants a memorable final speech, and this Doctor has had lots of them (bye Clara, screw you Zygons, bye Clara, by Clara...). I don't mind if he ends things off on a Matt Smith-era emotional thingie.

As mentioned elsewhere though, what i would rather avoid is having the regeneration telegraphed months in advance and thus have the thing looming over every aspect of the show. Both Ten and Eleven knew that they'd be changing in their immediate-enough futures to have it become part of the their character arc; it's been done twice now, and IMO it doesn't help enjoying the show knowing that your hero's on his way out AS PART OF THE SHOW.

At least his goodbye-to-Clara speech when he was losing his memories in "Hell Bent" was short & hurried. I liked that. I liked the way he was trying to cram all of his accumulated wisdom into a few seconds and it came out in a perfectly eccentric, Doctor-y way. I think that's as brilliant of a farewell speech that he'll ever get.

No big speeches.
Well, that's certainly not going to happen. This being Capaldi's finale and Moffat's last script as showrunner, I fear we're in for one hell of a Moffat Monologue to wrap things up. The Doctor will probably start his ten minute monologue the very instant his skin starts to glow. Because regeneration is very considerate to let you finish your monologue before it changes you.

And yet it will still make more sense than the "hold still while I hold you at bay with my weapon so I can monologue the shit out of this scene" that seems to be SOP on Class. Chibnall really needs to forbid the usage of monologues in the entire DW franchise when he takes over.

I liked Tennant an Smith's endings, but I agree about Capaldi's. I want something sudden, or at most, like you said, just enough time for "goodbye". But, this is Moffat we're talking about, so I doubt that the regeneration will go that way.

I always liked Eccleston's regeneration. Quite sudden but he still got a nice pay off line. To be honest all I definitely don't want is any whiny 'I don't want to go' guff.

I'm not so much discussing the regeneration here but more the episode itself: what if the episode has no prophecies (you know, four knocks, the fall of the eleventh etc...) or foreshadowing but instead it is the episode where something simply goes wrong. Just as they think they're in the clear - BANG! I always thought The Stolen Earth was the perfect final episode for a Doctor. Of course, you'd story wrapped up differently since Stolen Earth was one half of a story. But what a way to say farewell to a Doctor. Just the shock of it. If Moffat insists on condensing Capaldi's farewell into a single Christmas Special, at least give us that episode.

Yeah, I definitely hope there's no damn prophecies, this sort of stuff never used to happen in the classic series.

I think it only ever happened once - Tom Baker's final episode. But even then, the 'prophecy' was only realised at the last minute. There wasn't any big build up to imply "ok, this is it!"

Go out like people thought he'd be at the start....swearing like Malcom Tucker.

Seriously ? I think the weeping angels have been overused and lost their impact. I never, ever want to see Missy again (regenerate her off screen please) but a bit more River would be good.

And Captain Jack...
