Capaldi=cancellation?

I saw those episodes and for me the jury is still out, there is potential but he lacks the energy of the previous 3 doctors. He just seems more passive to me.

I don't see what's wrong with Capaldi's Doctor being different from the last three, it'l lbe to have a change of pace.

In 1984 there was a lot of hype surrounding a new Doctor-a fan of the series, a much older actor than the previous one, who was popular if not as popular as his predecessor, and who was a big fan of the series and wanted to play the role for as long as possible. There was also a lot of merchandise promoting this new Doctor, and the beginnings of American popularity, with the actors doing a tour.

We all know what happened then. Could it happen again?

I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

For some reason I always thought of Smith as the fifth doctor of the modern series because he's the young and reasonably popular one but incorporates elements of the second doctor, Tennant's the very funny and extremely popular one reminiscent of the fourth doctor and Eccleston's the firm seriousness of the third and first doctors, so I wouldn't be surprised if Capaldi incorpates elements of the sixth.

I will repeat: Sylvester McCoy's tour did not happen in 1984. It was in 1987. I know this because I was there, at his Spokane appearance.

It's unclear from the OP if they meant a tour of America. The op just said gaining popularity in America and a tour. Could be a tour of the UK.

regardless, it's about Colin. He was a big fan, he said at the time that he wanted to serve longer than Tom, and he's about 10 years older than Davison, a young popular Doctor. Like Smith.

Hasn't everyone but Chris said they wanted to serve "longer than Tom" ?

Of course, what constitutes "longer" is another debate. Years or episodes?

I think at the time Colin took the role, I'm assuming he meant years AND episodes--as the show was on much more consistently.

But, I never read about Tennant or Smith saying they wanted to be the Doctor longer than Tom... Or McCoy saying that.

Based on the amount of spinoff merchandise I'm seeing here in the US, I'd say Dr. Who is more popular than ever before. So I would be surprised to see it canceled anytime soon.

I think if Capaldi's Doctor doesn't gel with people, they will either A) Alter his personailty ala McCoy, or B) Recast with an actor whose performance is similar to Tennant and Smith's.

It won't be cancelled. That will have to take an enormous amount of disinterest in the program, and its not gonna happen.

As pointed out many a time in this thread, the good Doctor is as popular as he's ever been. Hopefully, the Capaldi era will continue this trend, and the fangirls' fainting over the lack of boy-toy Docs won't hurt the program.

Count me in the camp that says Doctor Who won't be cancelled if Capaldi bombs. They'll either adjust the character (Hartnell and Colin Baker both toned down the harshness), or, if it's really bad, they'll regenerate the Doctor.

I think the earliest they'd cancel the series would be if they had 2 unpopular Doctors in a row. They might consider giving the series a rest at that point. Could always come back later.

I read the script for Breath Deep and really enjoyed it. So, I don't have any concerns at the moment. Regard those who have seen the B&W, that's only a working print so it won't have the editting, SFx, and overall zest of the finished product.

Hold off judgment for now! It's not fair to give a grade based on a rough draft!

I have a funny feeling that the next Doctor after Capaldi will be a woman. (Although probably a woman with somewhat Matt Smith-like sensibilities.)

I think Romola Garai would be fantastic. However, I'd want a different producer; I don't trust Moffat to write a female Doctor; especially after his comments on Helen Mirren. (Who, by the way, would be awesome. Maybe she could be Romana against Capaldi.)

Yes she would, though I still think someone like Olivia Coleman would be a better choice. Remember there was that Mirror story floating around earlier in the year that said Capaldi was going to be a placeholder and more traditional Doctor in anticipation of something very different.

I think my only concern with a female Doctor is what happens in the future, ie when she regenerates. Just look at the hoo-ha because Judi Dench retired from playing M and M became a man again!

That isn't a reason not to do it, and I guess someone will always have an axe to grind (Why is the Doctor white, why is the Doctor still a man, why do they have to cast a woman again, another black Doctor what are they thinking, why is he Welsh...etc etc... :) )

I agree with Mr Awe btw, I think it would take two unpopular Doctors to equal cancellation, or else a general tiredness with the show that means people tune out even if the incumbant Doctor is awesome.

Even though I don't have nearly as many problems with Moffat as many do I kinda hope he'll step aside fairly soon, though as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.

^ I really enjoy Moffat's work. I love his quirky takes on things. But, I agree, I'm hoping he steps aside fairly soon as well. No later than series 9. Change is what keeps Doctor Who fresh. There's always a risk with change, but there's a risk with not changing as well.

I think a bad show runner would work the same way as an unpopular Doctor, they'd be replaced fairly quickly.

Exactly. For all the fans who want Moffat's head on a pike along Traitors Row because they think he's a disaster, the more important people -- namely, the people at the BBC who sign his paycheck and allocate his budget -- think he's doing a bang-up job, otherwise they would have canned him. Everyone's replaceable, even the producer.
