Canucks Fans Lose it - What the hell is wrong with people?

Sort of the way the NY Rangers are known as the "Broadway Blueshirts" I guess. Or the Minnesota Vikings as the "Purple People Eaters."

Wow. I had to leave for work right after they presented the Cup and I remember thinking that the fans at Rogers Arena were actually really classy.

Really? My impression was that the fans were booing so loudly the announcer had to struggle to make himself heard congratulating the Bruins etc. (which I have no problem with necessarily, but I wouldn't call it "classy").

They were booing the guy presenting the cup, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. He gets booed pretty much eveytime he makes an appearance in a Canadian arena, it began the second he started to speak and largely ended when Chara lifted the cup.

To give people an idea of just how much the NHL commissioner is reviled in Canada--a few years ago, the plot of the movie Bon Cop, Bad Cop revolved around a series of murders committed by a deranged hockey fan who was furious that Canadian teams were being moved to the States. The NHL commissioner in this movie was named "Harry Buttman."

Ah, I see, that makes sense, thanks for the clarification.

Well, FWIW, my older brother was in Vancouver yesterday, and was commenting on the rioting on Facebook last night.

He's convinced that the rioters were suburbanites, from Surrey in particular, and that instead of closing liquor stores early, police should have closed the Skytrain.

My older brother said:
Fuck the 'burban idiots burning shit in Vancouver tonight. Fuck 'em. Makes me sick. Gastown is calm.

That's bullshit.

There was no riots in Surrey before or after they started running the trains again. The news has reported several times that the rioters were young adults, college aged. Where they are from I don't know but blaming it on your neighboring city's population reeks of passing responsibility.

The only way for your brother to 'figure out' where they came from, short of stopping rioters and asking, is if he did some racial/economic profiling...

I'm sure there were people there from Surrey, and also Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, New Westminster. The Lower Mainland was in Downtown Vancouver rioting after losing. People are going to have to take responsibility for it instead of blaming others.

People get drunk and riot. But people, it's just a game! :( I don't think Seattle rioted after we lost the Super Bowl.

Some of these fuckwits would have gone a on a rampage even if canucks hadn't chocked (seriously they blew Boston away in the first two cames then dropped the puck big time).

Vancouver might just be grateful however it's not Montreal with the Candienne fans - they rampage when their team wins.

That's bullshit.

Oh?

Well, I wasn't there. But he was. I know him, and I generally trust both his powers of observation, and his judgement.

You, on the other, I don't know. I have no idea where you were last night, or to what extent I should trust what you say. You're just a pseudonymous nobody on the internet.

So, you'll pardon me if I take his word over yours, I'm sure.

What the fuck are people thinking? I doubt the people doing it are seriously motivated by the Canucks' loss. Some assholes will just take any opportunity to wreck shit if there's a big enough crowd and they think they can get away with it. Pretty appalling either way.

That's exactly it. My wife, daughter and I went down to Canada Place by the Vancouver Fairmont to watch on their giant outdoor screen. Although the game was shitty, the crowd was great and there were a lot of families with kids there. We weren't afraid as after the Gold Medal Hockey win in the 2010 Olympics, there was a HUGE party in the streets all night and there wasn't a single incident of violence as I recall; just a lot of people having a good time.

However, with 10 mins left in the 3rd period, we decided to head out and catch the Skytrain back before it got too busy. It seemed that many families and youngsters had the same idea.

Glad we did! As we were on the train headed back, everyone was on Twitter and updating each other on the violence... After the Olympics and other events over the last 20 years we've used to build the wonderful cultural fabric of this great city, we thought that the '94 riots were behind us. It's sad to think that nothing changed.

Once we got off the train in Surrey to head back to our car, we saw several young guys in their jerseys headed West on the Skytrain, clearly looking to cause trouble. Pretty fucking pathetic and sad...

... not as pathetic as the Canucks though this series! amiright??? BADUM!

Too soon?:rommie:

Yeah... fuck Gary Bettman, that rat-faced weasel.

Yeah, Gary Bettman gets booed when he goes out to get the newspaper off his front porch in the morning. I wasn't about to hold that against the Rogers Arena crowd. I'd boo that clown too. I was referring to how graciously they treated the Bruins, and Tim Thomas in particular.

I wasn't aware of the backstory, the volume of the booing was just very noticable to me and apparently I misinterpreted the reasons for that, sorry.

Of course I would do the same.

Where was I? I was in North Van were I work. Then I went around Vancouver to head home which is in Surrey.

I am curious as to why your brother assumes the rioters were from Surrey. Again other than stopping the rioters/ police to ask or making snap observations based possibly on race or apparent economic class, he really doesn't know.

He's your brother so trust him as you should.

So back to my main point. Instead of blaming others for what happened people need to take responsibility. People from Vancouver are blaming people from Surrey. Some people from BC are blaming people from out of province. The riots were embarrassing enough without the finger pointing.

Yeah, I saw that, no worries. I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to talk shit about that guy ;)
