Canucks Fans Lose it - What the hell is wrong with people?

When the Canucks made it to the playoffs, it became some sort of national pride thing in Canada. Yeah, we take hockey way too seriously.

But even the Prime Minister named his new cat through a Facebook "contest," he named it "Stanley." Whenever a Canadian team is in the playoffs, all of Canada seems to take on this responsibility and pride in whatever team it is, takes them under our wing and supports them.

So what do we do now? After their loss and the riots? Will Canada as a nation take any responsibility in what happened in Vancouver? What the fuck is wrong with people that they feel they need to burn cars, riot and fight because a stupid fucking sports team lost a game? Is this where our priorities lay? Will Canada as a nation rise up and condemn what has happened in Vancouver the same way we rose up to support the Canucks? Will the team publicly condemn its fans for what they've done, as it should? These "fans" should be admonished from all corners. This is not what sports entertainment should be about.

Anyone here who was in Vancouver last night? Anyone somehow understand and want to defend this behaviour?

Rioting over a goddamn sports game. People need to grow the fuck up. Sometimes, I'm ashamed of humanity.

:(

I don't get it either man. Alcohol plays a big part I'm sure in the change in people's normal behavior.

Perhaps someone with a better understanding of human psychology and physiology related to alcohol consumption, 'group think,' and overall a mob mentality can explain it.

When I have a little bit to much to drink I get sleepy personally - but not violent. So these fans reaction to the game and the loss is bizarre to me.

It's funny that the riots are about hockey, the only sport whiter than waterpolo; some racists' heads somewhere must be exploding thinking about that right about now. ;)

"...Always about hockey....." .... Soccer or football matches have equally if not more so bad reputation. However the rioting in that case tends to be limited to the stadiums themselves.

Well, FWIW, my older brother was in Vancouver yesterday, and was commenting on the rioting on Facebook last night.

He's convinced that the rioters were suburbanites, from Surrey in particular, and that instead of closing liquor stores early, police should have closed the Skytrain.

My older brother said:
Fuck the 'burban idiots burning shit in Vancouver tonight. Fuck 'em. Makes me sick. Gastown is calm.

Canadians can be at least proud of one fact rather than people shooting at each other they stabbed each other. ;)

I'd like to focus on the 99% of the people of Vancouver who didn't riot last night. :)

People who are extremely loyal to group memberships tend to be vulnerable to extreme behaviors. Phil Zimbardo at Stanford University has coined the term the Lucifer Effect to describe people's potential to show either good or evil behavior, depending on the power of the group situation. His point is that while there are no doubt some bad apples out there, there are a lot of bad barrels that turn good apples into bad apples.

I think this more so had an affect they anything else:

Funny, because I saw the riots in Greece yesterday and thought to myself... Thank god that doesn't happen here.

Did the rioters vandalize Gap Stores and Starbucks? If so it's a hoot to see suburbanites destroy the very stores they shop and eat at.

If the All Blacks lose the RWC expect this across NZ.

Uhhh...not sure the All Blacks or RWC is, but is sounds like something that would make the white supremisists happy.

As for the riots, I don't get it. I'm not sure how people equate your team hoisting the trophy to fires, looting, and flipping cars over.

All Blacks refers to the colour of their shirts although they are traditionally a very ethnically diverse team as far as I know.

Wow. I had to leave for work right after they presented the Cup and I remember thinking that the fans at Rogers Arena were actually really classy. Of course, I didn't see anything from the streets. Then I get home from work and flip on the news and see that.

What the fuck are people thinking? I doubt the people doing it are seriously motivated by the Canucks' loss. Some assholes will just take any opportunity to wreck shit if there's a big enough crowd and they think they can get away with it. Pretty appalling either way.

Really? My impression was that the fans were booing so loudly the announcer had to struggle to make himself heard congratulating the Bruins etc. (which I have no problem with necessarily, but I wouldn't call it "classy").
