Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothing

I can't believe that the film is before the cameras and we know absolutely nothing about it... Not even any substantial rumors.

If you remember we pretty much knew that entire outline of the plot about a year and a half before the movie debuted due to AICN coming up with a huge scoop.

When do you think someone will come up with something interesting about this film?

Re: Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothin

Probably, things leak on their own schedule! Just have to wait for someone to get disgruntled or chatty!

Re: Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothin

I can believe it.
But if your intent was share that "it sucks we still don't know anything"; solidarity. I'd like to know something.

Other than the disturbing rumors that it claims to include (recycle) Harry Mudd and Khan and a bunch of other characters/situations from the series that we've already seen ad nauseum in syndication for decades.

Re: Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothin

The last time I heard something about the film was the whole Kahn thing. I will be really really really disappointed if it's Kahn. Remember, they're in an alternate universe, they don't need to follow the same format. If they bring back Kahn, than just for shits and giggle I will forever demand that they bring back George and Gracie.

No, in fact we didn't know the entire outline of the plot a year and a half before the movie debuted, and if you think back you'll recall that AICN's supposed scoop turned out to be almost wholly erroneous (as did a couple of much later ones claiming Paramount insider status.) What really happened last time was that we knew almost nothing until about six months out, when the first full theatrical trailer came out in November 2008, after which we knew only slightly more than almost nothing.

I expect that this time will be much like last time, and that J.J. Abrams' usual policy of keeping everything clamped down as tightly as possible and releasing only tiny glimpses and small details at wide intervals will be the standard order of business.

Old, old, ooooold rumor.

Re: Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothin

Owrite, Mitchell is out, only Harry Mudd or Trelane or the Talosians or the Horta remain.

I hope for Trelane.

Actually, Moriarty's piece at AICN in August 2007 may have missed on some details but was shockingly accurate with regard to very, very big things:

Picture an incident that throws a group of Romulans back in time. Picture that group of Romulans figuring out where they are in the timeline, then deciding to take advantage of the accident to kill someone’s father, to erase them from the timeline before they exist, thereby changing all of the TREK universe as a result. Who would you erase? Whose erasure would leave the biggest hole in the TREK universe is the question you should be asking.

Who else, of course, but James T. Kirk?

If Spock were in a position to change that incident back, and then in a position to guard that timeline and make sure things happen the way they’re supposed to, it creates...

... well, what does it create? Because evidently the plan is to use this second timeline as a way of rebooting without erasing or ignoring canon. These new voyages of the ENTERPRISE, they’re taking place in whatever timeline starts with this story. Maybe this timeline features dramatic differences. Like... say... if Vulcan were to be blown up. If the Vulcans in the series were suddenly the last of their kind, alone in the universe, it would change who they are and maybe even redefine their strict rejection of emotion in favor of logic.

You can introduce these Universe2 versions of classic TREK events and characters, and you can play with the audience’s expectation. Things have changed. Some things play out the way you expect… some don’t. It’s basically the same solution Marvel Comics has in terms of publishing, the way they use their ULTIMATES line to reboot continuity.

As a friend said when I was talking to him about this tonight, “Wait... so you’re saying they’re not just doing a square one reboot that would simplify everything, but that they’re actually making it... more complicated?”

It would appear so. Not that I think TREK fans mind complicated. It’s certainly not the safest choice if this is, in fact, the direction he goes with the film.

He sort of pretended that a lot of this was speculation, but he hits the major points so specifically that he'd doubtless either seen the treatment, script or spoken with someone who had.

But you know what? I enjoyed all of the kvetching we all did on this board about those (as it turned out, erroneous) rumors.
They were fun, and gave us all something to talk/argue about.

I want More rumors, erroneous or otherwise.

Re: Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothin

I remember seeing some leaked pictures early on of Spock wearing the outfit he wore speaking to his mother and rejecting his acceptance into the Vulcan Science Academy.

The other early picture I saw was of all the cadets in front of the Star Fleet building.

I too, thought that some photos at least would have been leaked by now.

Re: Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothin

Here ya go...

The Vulcans will leave the Federation, join the Klingon Empire, and become a new enemy. Cumberbatch will play a former childhood friend of Spock that will test his loyalty to both the Federation and his fellow Vulcans.

You heard it here first.

Just kiddin'...

Cumberbatch is playing "An ancestor of Spock's"

Actually, I like the idea of Cumberbatch playing a 'renegade' Vulcan who will go as far as to resort to violent acts in order to secure a new homeworld for his Vulcan refugee brethren.
disclaimer: I heard no rumors about this -- this is just my own idea.

The only problem with this plot is the similarities to the Palestinian/Israeli issue, and all of the Political Correctness that goes along with it (especially considering that Abrams is Jewish).

What I mean about the political correctness is this:
Due to potical correctness, it would difficult hard to make Cumberbatch a villainous and evil terrorist, because it may offend Arabs. HOWEVER, political correctness would also make it difficult to portray this renegade Vulcan as someone who elicits some sympathy from the audience (even in the face of his violent acts), because it may offend Jews.

Personally, I would love to see a film explore this moral ambiguity -- i.e., the ambiguity of having sympathy for the plight of the homeless refugees -versus- the idea that resorting to violence (for any cause, no matter how just) is morally wrong.

you know 'Arabs' aren't the only people who can be terrorists . . . so a character in a movie, an alien character, who is a terrorist shouldn't offend 'Arabs'
I think it's a silly idea . . . archetype does not equal ethnicity

As I said, I was talking about a plot potentially similar to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict -- PLUS I didn't say just the Arabs could be offended. I also said (depending on the details) that Jews close to the situation may also be offended.

If the situation in the film (i.e. the plight of the Vulcans looking to secure a home, and some Vulcans who may resort to terrorism to do so) is TOO SIMILAR to the Palestinian/Israeli situation, then you can bet it would be Arabs and/or Jews who would be offended.

...And as to which of the two that would be more offended?: that would depend on whether or not the Vulcans (at least the ones who resort to terrorism) are shown in a sympathetic light, or are shown as being completely evil.

Please don't post inline images not hosted on your own web space; hotlinking to images resident on other people's web space means that you're leeching their bandwidth, which is not in accordance with TrekBBS policy concerning posting of images.

You know, I'd never even seen that one. It dates to a bit before I started consistently paying attention to news about the movie, and makes certain later AICN "scoops" (those to which I referred above) seem all that much more bizarrely off-base.

Re: Can't believe that this movie is shooting and we still know nothin

M'Sharak:

You have no idea what you are talking about yet you state your opinion with utter confidence. The story that AICN broke nearly two years before Star Trek "09" debuted couldn't have been more on the money.

I suspect that any day now details will start to filter out, but they won't be on the same scale of the story that Moriarty broke in "07". The creative team behind the sequel most likely learned their lesson with the first film.
