Canned tuna in oil. Ugh!

So I bought some canned tuna in oil by accident a little while ago and finally decided to give it a try today. I'm wishing I hadn't. This stuff is disgusting! I don't understand how people can eat it.

I have three cans left but I just don't know if I can eat it. I hate to throw food out but I just may have to in this case.

I actually like it very much. I use it for salads, sandwiches, sauces and even plain pasta. You just have to throw away the conservation oil (which is only for conservation and so doesn't taste very good) smash the tuna with a fork and add high quality olive oil.

...I hope you didn't eat it directly from the can, because in that case, it is disgusting.

I prefer tuna in brine but I sometimes use tuna in vegetable oil when I make fishcakes.

I tend to go through one or two cans a day throwing it in with rice or pasta. I bought some with brine by accident and I had to drain it and drown it in oil before it tasted right.

If I eat straight from the can (sadly it's been known to happen and I look like a bum when it does) I go for the spring water as I just can't deal with the oil on it's own.

I tired draining it but unfortunately it was flaked tuna so it started seeping out of the can as I tried to drain it. I mixed it with brown rice and hot sauce as usual but it was nowhere near as good as tuna in brine.

Same here. The stuff packed in water always seems to be more expensive where I live for some reason. And to be honest, unless I'm eating it plain then I don't notice any real taste difference once I've drained the can.

I don't like it in oil either, I only buy it in water. The way to drain it is to cut off the lid then push it down into the tuna and hold the can upside down. No tuna can get out that way but the liquid does.

I empty the can in a flour sift and press the oil out with a large spoon. Squeezing the can lid into the tuna guaranteed a shirt or window curtain full of tuna oil

You can also rinse the oil off - you need to have a wire strainer instead of a colander, though, or as you've noticed, some of the tuna will wash away.

I dont think I've ever even had tuna in oil. Only ever bought it in water or brine or whatever it is. I dont eat much tuna though.

Well I'm living in Romania right now so my choices are limited, but it was Golden Line. They produce tuna packed in brine too, I just grabbed the wrong stuff.

No worries though, I move back to Canada in less than 3 months!

I only typically have it packed in water. The oily stuff just seems so slimy and greasy to me.

Well anything you get on the shelves in Canada will probably be great, definitely better than what you can find in Romania, thanks to CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and their strict regulations Canada has some of the highest quality of food on the planet. A can of tuna, for instance, that you would find on the shelf in the USA wouldn't pass up here.

That's why I specifically get the tuna in water can. The one in oil is just plain nasty! But tuna in water is yummy. Yall are making me hungry..didn't have much lunch today.
