Definitely a bummer. Leaves a hole on my Friday nights, to be sure.
I suspect that we have seen the last of Star Trek as a weekly TV series. Given the massive production costs, the vast, VAST amounts of other Trek series available on DVD and in syndication, the competition for viewing time among scifi diehards, and most importantly, given the absolute inability to please even the diehard Trek community (let ALONE reach a broader audience) there is no feasible way to get the ball rolling again once it comes to a stop.
On the other hand, this MAY heighten the desire for a Trek movie or two in a few years (though I doubt it).
Interesting... I spent so much of my childhood without new Trek episodes (TNG debuted when I was a junior in HS) and now next year will be the first in 18 years that there is no new Trek on television.
