I assume this is business attire, but it all depends on the size of the checks. Are you talking a small pattern with light colored borders, or are you talking flannel shirt sized checks?
You can probably pull off the small checks, but I would advise against it. I have a few pinstripe suits, but I always wear a plain shirt with them. I have some plain suits and work nicely with a very subtle checked shirt, but I won't wear a tie with it.
