Yep, I do the same. It's funny when the kids look at you and say "You just did that in your head?" like you made some Rainman calculations instead of basic math.

I agree. It's really easy without an unnecessary step.
I'm kind of stunned that this and fractions are being taught in a college level math course. 
Shouldn't this be taught earlier or do I have unrealistic expectations of the educational system?

It's a Funadmentals of Math of course to, I suppose, to refresh people/help people who have trouble with math.
