Can you see Chris Pine as Admiral Kirk?

Gorn Captain

Commander
Red Shirt
There has been a lot of talk about how the current iteration of Star Trek revisits or reimagines previous Trek story lines.

However, I assume that one story that will not be told is of the struggle Kirk has to hold on to command and resist the temptation of promotion?

Given the age of both Pine and the character he plays, this initially seemed very unlikely to me. However, upon further reflection, maybe not.

1. The third film will happen several years later.
2. With Pike and Marcus gone, there are no current "senior" Starfleet leaders still alive, except for Admiral Madea.

Of course, I do not mean this would come up in the third film. But I wonder if it has possibilities to occur past that?

I'm pretty sure Starfleet has more than just three flag officers. Hell, Pike was only an admiral for a year, so I'm not sure just how "senior" he was.

The thing is, I can't see 1966 Shatner as Admiral Kirk, either. But then that's the point of having him be an admiral in the movies, to show his career growth (and that a subplot for both TMP and TWOK were related to age).

However, even then, IV made it a point to highlight that Kirk was never comfortable with the title of Admiral either, or else he wouldn't keep having these adventures. That's why he was "demoted" to Captain, which was more of a reward than a punishment.

This. Pine's Kirk is 26 in ID, Shatner's is 40 in TMP and 50 in WoK.

That said, hopefully this Kirk won't make the mistake Shatner's did and accept promotion. He might even get told not to by his older self in ST3 and change his future.

Since Pine's Kirk is a lot closer to Movie Kirk than TV Kirk it shouldn't be problem. Staying an Admiral might be.

Agree. :vulcan:

Yes , he looked the part in the end, when he was giving the closing speech about those who wanted to do us harm.

^ Well, if you recall, Kirk was "really" a Lieutenant for most of ST XI (it's on the transporter readout screen). I believe that if the crisis hadn't interrupted things, Kirk actually would have graduated from the Academy, with that rank - exactly as Kirk Prime did. I can believe that, based on what we saw onscreen. It's not a stretch - Kirk Prime took cadet cruises with the rank of Ensign, but graduated as a Lieutenant, and I can see nuKirk doing the same.

He'll always be Cadet Kirk to me. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing him start the next movie as Commodore Kirk, be quickly busted to Lieutenant j.g., be promoted in the crisis to Vice Admiral, have to resign his position and take on a post as Commander, get cashiered back to Cadet 2nd class, and finally end the movie as Corporal-Captain Radar O'Reilly (B Phil and a ScD ABD).

I want this to happen if only so that I could have a neat flowchart hanging in my room.
