Can you reccomend TNG books?

Hi I have never posted in this forum before.

I have also never read any star trek books before but I am very tempted to do so, only I am a little daunted by the shear number of them! I am very familiar with all of the episodes and the characters of TNG so I am sure that I could pick up any of the books set in the period that episodes are in and be able to follow them.

I was wandering if anyone could point me towards some books that are particularly good reads.

Thanks for any help.

I haven't read many of the newer TNG novels, but Peter David's were always a joy to read back in the day. He really nails all of the characters and spins a good yarn with the right amount of drama and humor.

Vendetta, Metamorphosis, Reunion and Captain's Honor are old, but I have fond memories of them. You can probably get them cheap at Amazon. I just got Q-Squared, another oldie that's supposed to be very good, there. I haven't read it yet.

There are many more good ones, but I can't think of them at the mo.

If you like Picard, The Buried Age explores his backstory in a wonderful way. One of my first TNG books was The Romulan Prize, and I think it still holds up.

Thanks for all of your advice, I shall have a look at a few on amazon marketplace and pick up a few of the cheap ones, I just hope they arrive before I go on holiday!

Please keep suggestions coming!

Were you interested in getting into the current post-series continuity or did you want to stick to stuff during the TV series?

I wasn't a massive fan of how Nemesis ended (was always a bit of a data fan!) and so was planning on reading the ones during the lifespan of the Enterprise-D (always thought it was a far nicer ship anyway).

I have just ordered Imzadi, Romulan Prize, Q-squared and The Buried Age off Amazon. I decided to give Vendetta a miss as I have never been a big fan of the Borg story lines. The buried age looks facinating, I am a massive picard fan and I look forward to it.

Thanks again for all of your help, I am a quick reader so if you have any more advice I will be buying a few more books before I go so let me know.

Another oldie that I liked was Reunion by Michael Jan Friedman. I'm not sure what the other people around here think of it, but I did also like Imzadi and Q-Squared, so I think if you like them you'll like it to. In it Picard's crew from the Stargazer (who also appear in the beginning of The Buried Age) come aboard the E-D, and someone starts killing them.

It's been a LONG time since I read Reunion, so I don't remember many of the details, but I do have a positive recollection of it and most of Friedman's other novels I read back in the day.

Reunion is my favorite of MJF's so far; I find his novels, by and large, to be pleasant but sort of unremarkable, but Reunion is really cool.

You definitely can't go wrong with Imzadi or Q-Squared. I also hope you do decide to pick up Vendetta. It was a great Borg story. I enjoyed most of the Peter David TNG books that I read. One of my early favorites was A Rock and a Hard Place.

I also read the Romulan Prize. I liked that one too. The Romulan Stratagem was okay. Reunion wasn't bad either, though I think it might be best to check out the Stargazer series first, some stuff in Reunion might be spoilers if you were interested in reading the Stargazer series. If you aren't, have at it, and to be honest, Reunion came out before the Stargazer books anyway, and it didn't dampen my enjoyment of them. Federation, features both the TNG and TOS crews, so I'm not sure if its technically a TNG book, but I recommend it. Also, Crossover, which I wish had been made into a TNG film. It might've been better than Nemesis for a Romulan-centered story.

From what I recall, I liked Infiltrator (but I'm not sure if it was the book itself, or using Augments, which I am a fan. I do remember liking the character Astrid Kemal from that book). I also liked The Devil's Heart.

I've enjoyed most of the post-Nemesis books: Death in Winter, Resistance, The Greater the Sum, and the Destiny trilogy most of all. I thought Q&A was just all right, and I didn't care for Before Dishonor, I thought it was over-the-top.

I read Reunion because I actually enjoyed Death In Winter (for the most part) but have never read Imzadi or Q-Suared, and still really liked it. I love all of MJF's stuff. They might be a little same-y perhaps, and I see the word "unremarkable" but they're all solid. Very meat and potatoes, but there's a reason so many people like meat and potatoes

I read Metamorphosis and Imzadi back in the day, when they were new. I'd like to read Imzadi again if I can find a copy somewhere. I'm enjoying the post-Nemesis Enterprise E stuff.

I've rarely met a Star Trek novel I didn't like, so any of the old TNG novels would be worth a look IMO. Not sure how Pocket's been about making the older out-of-print stuff into ebooks. I get my older Trek novels at my local used book store. Picked up almost all the Stargazer books there.

Pocket's been pretty incredible at converting the out-of-print stuff into eBooks. At this point, there's probably only about a dozen random ones that aren't available for Kindle. Used to be missing a bunch of Voyager novels, New Frontier #5, and the Day Of Honor miniseries, but those are all available now. All that I know of that's still missing are the first three Shatnerverse novels and Dark Mirror, but I'm sure there are a few others.
