Can You Find The Quote?

T'Girl

Need some help remember a quote from a Next Generation episode. The scene take place in sick bay. I'm pretty sure the doctor isn't Pulaski, but Crusher. The doctor is going to inject a drug into her patent. The patent is probably Riker or LaForge. Crusher has to go and get the drug first.

The patent asks "Why don't you (Crusher) just replicate it?"

Crusher responds that the pharmaceutical is too complex for the replicator to produce.

It's killing me because I just saw the episode a couple of weeks ago. I want to use this in another thread to show to limitations of the replicator and by extension the transporter (can the transporter create a human being?), I would love any help that can be provided.

Might this be it, from "Code of Honor"?

PICARD
Meanwhile, you were testing
whether we can replicate the
vaccine...

BEVERLY
And we can't! Their sample
works fine when used as an
injection, but it becomes unstable
when we try to replicate it. You
must get vaccine from the planet,
Captain. As much as you can.
Immediately!

If you go to google, and type in the search engine site:http://www.chakoteya.net/ followed by whatever line of dialogue you're looking for, in theory you should be able to find it every time as that site has transcripts for every episode of Trek.

Because of that, I think the episode you're talking about is The Enemy:

SICKBAY
(Crusher is operating on the injured Romulan)
CRUSHER: We thought it would be like working on Vulcans, but there are subtle differences. Too many of them.
PICARD: Can you treat him?
CRUSHER: He has cell damage to vital areas. He's going to need a transfusion of compatible ribosomes in order to recover. I'm setting up a schedule to test every member of the crew.
PICARD: We can't use the replicator?
CRUSHER: The molecules are too complex.

Thank you Piper, that is what i was looking for, nicely goes to my separate point that the replicator/transporter can't do just anything.

It's worth noting there is a difference here: at least in the first instance (Code of Honor), while it could not be replicated, it could be transported.

In fact, it seems many things that cannot be replicated can be transported. So it is clearly established that the transporter can do things a replicator cannot. The list of things that cannot be transported is very short indeed, and usually has to do with volatility not complexity (antimatter cannot be transported because it upsets the magnetic confinement, for example, and the stuff Data had to shuttle over to Kivas Fajo for another).

I agree that it is at least implied that a transported cannot make a human being (at least, not one that is alive), but it is best not to pin such an argument to the limits of the replicator, since the transporter can do many things the replicator cannot.

Didn't Wesley transport antimatter in Peak Performance? And didn't Kirk and some one beam down to a planet with an antimatter bomb in Obsession?
