Can X1 appeal to fans and hardcore fans and non-fans?

YES!

I admit, I'm one for a recast of TOS pretty much. And just toss DS9 and ENT and VOY in the can...

But, can a well written story be crafted that appeals to people whose favorite Trek is Voyage Home and to a person who own DS9 complete on DVD? Yes.

If we can put a man on the moon.....

If it's well written, well acted, well directed, has high production values, looks good, has some action and some humor people will flock to it. It's Star Trek dammit!

Yeah, it can appeal to most of us.

You're always going to lose some folks - there are them that ain't never accepted TNG, you know...

Yes it can, unless you mean psychotically hard-core fans who will allow some silly little canonical detail to override their ability to enjoy a well-written, well-acted, well-directed movie like any normal person would enjoy something that's good, regardless of whether they've heard about the characters before. Since there are very few people like that, it will have no measurable impact on the box office.

Careful, they're all registered here ;)

And yes, Star Trek has appealed to the masses before and it obviously appeals to all fans on some level. There's definitely the possibility to please everyone. It shouldn't even be that hard. Just deliver a solid story and the rest will fall in place.

I'm a huge fan of things that are done well.

And yet, I seem to dislike things that are not done well.

I'm funny that way.

Someone should do a study...

Ha, ha. Seems simple enough, but we all have our biases. It could be well done, but not appeal to a mass audience. So it has to both be well done and ..anywho.

Yes, I caught that X1 thing; I like it. Evokes Chuck Yeager. Which is a good thing.
