Can someone explain GR canon to me as it relates to the film?

Because they didn't feel like doing so.

My "question" was rhetorical, genius.

No... because where do you stop? Contradictory script drafts? Scribbles on napkins? Whispered promises to willing young actresses on his casting couch?

I humbly submit that GR's Bible - which states, incidentally, that the Enterprise was constructed in space and is not designed to land on planetary surfaces - possesses a slightly higher official cachet than your (typically bullshit) examples, especially when one considers that every writer who wished to submit a script or treatment to TOS was obliged to write within its exceedingly generous constraints. Why couldn't Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci have done the same if they truly respect the source material?

So you also feel that Kirk had a radio in his head? or does the writer writing directly about his character not count either?

Kirk's "senceiver implant" was mentioned in GR's ST:TMP novelization from 1979. It was not mentioned in the TOS Bible which he wrote over a decade earlier.

You what?

TGT

Well he wrote the novel and he wrote the TOS bible - are they not both equally "true" ? If not, why not?

Oh god. Is this what the fandom of Star Trek is reduced to? Clinging and grasping to everything that they think J.J. Abrams has done wrong. The film is 6 months away from release!

Now I just need to clarify things for myself, because maybe some facts I think I know are wrong.

Wasn't GR removed from the set because it was widely believed at the time that it was him that was leaking the script? And the picture of him as "Robert April" was just a picture of him in a Starfleet uniform on set of a TOS episode?

Honest to god, we're inches away from J.J. Abrams being sued by mass trekkies claiming they have been raped and their childhood violated. Just wait for the movie before you cry about J.J not keeping canon.

I will do the very best that I can to explain this, that is once I have seen the /entire/ film. I promise, however even I as a self professed 'Old Man' and die hard TOS'er think we should all /relax/ and chill until the Movie is out.

If it's that awful then tear into it!

Trek canon has been a mess for sometime, and it will give you a headache to try and sort it out.

The Writings of Roddenberry have status above Canon. I thought everyone knew that. Therefore Robert April exists and starships must have nacelles in even numbers.

Is anyone else embarrassed reading this? It sounds like a quote from Futurama.
I stopped being embarrassed by things they write awhile back.:alienblush: Now I only feel pity. I had a grandfather with Alzheimer's who also preferred to live in the past and deny the future. But, on the bright side, he died a very happy old man at the age of 96.

Only a small (yet vocal) minority is reduced to this level. Most of us accept that there is a new man in the "captain's chair" calling the shots for this new Paramount venture and are anxiously waiting for release of the movie before anyone cries, "Heresy!" or "JJ raped my childhood!"

So far I don't like the story we've been given, and I don't like the look we're seeing. The whole thing feels very generic and cookie cutter and I'm not feeling that "Trek Vibe" from the material we've seen so far. Not because I'm clinging to canon or the past, but because I'm not seeing anything that makes the movie jump out at me.

That being said, I"m still open to the movie being good. I hope I'm wrong, I hope movie makes me look like a idiot for doubting it.

GR canon = "it's what i say it is"

so, since he's dead, he's got no say.

simple.

Gene canon = "It's not canon, it's not canon...how many zeros on the check? It's canon, it's canon!"

Well said, my brother. Well said.

Mention James T Kirk to the average person....they think of Star Trek..

Mention Robert April....who?!

Not completely true. I've been doing my part to make sure people I know know exactly who Robert April is. You could say I'm a missionary spreading the word of pure Trek.

Because they're writing the story they want to write, instead of being slave to what a bunch of people wrote in some bible in the 60's.

Now you're joking. Either that, or you need help. I'm gonna assume you're joking.
