Miss Chicken, have you considered renting storage space or do you know someone who would be willing to store your books for you?

To answer Timewalker's questions/suggestions

That is the only Jean Plaidy book in my collection. My mother had all of Jean Plaidy's books when I was young and I read them as a teenager and into my twenties. I especially liked the French ones (Catherine de Medici, Henri of Navarre) and the ones about the Borgias.

My craft table and dining table are in front of the windows, my sofa is in the middle of the room so that I can put bookcases up against the walls. I have lost some shelves to DVD storage, to the memorial tribute shelf to Miss Chicken and to my doll and crystal collections.

I will not be touching books from the following collections

Sherlock Holmes - canon, pastiches, DVDS and some collectibles.

Icelandic - including novels by Icelandic authors, the Icelandic Sagas, general books about the country etc

Native American collection - which is mainly about the Cheyenne

Science - including wildlife, astronomy, general science, evolution.

Australian especially Tasmanian history

Children's book collection - which mainly concentrates on pre-1970s Wizard of Oz books and books illustrated by Libico Maraja

My 500 Lark collection such as 500 Teapots, 500 Glass Objects etc I have about 22 of these books. I will also keep most of my books about art.

My Books about books, about languages.

So it looks like fiction is going to be the main victim of this weed. Science fiction will be the hardest to do.

I am unable to get rid of books. I live in a warehouse of books that have been accumulating for forty years. Soon I must buy a bigger house so that I can accumulate more books.

If I rented storage place for my books I think it would mean that I had crossed from bibliophilia to bibliomania.

I plan to go into a retirement village when I am about 60 years old. That is about three years time and it would mean a huge downsize for me, so this might just be a practice run for that future day.

I voted yes because I believe in you.

I'm the wrong person to ask though as I have little to no trouble giving anything I own away. If anything books are the easiest. I always think that if I miss the book I will just hunt it down and replace it. This has happened exactly once though, otherwise I don't even think about them.

I know a lot of people are sentimental about who gave them the book, where they got it etc.. but I am not. If I lost a book I loved because someone gave it to me I would just replace it and remember that I had such a book because of the initial giver.

I don’t tend to hang onto books as often now as I used to, predominantly this is down to space issues, but also the older I get, the more drains on my time there are, and the sheer volume of new books there are to read means it’s incredibly rare that I return to books once I’ve read them once. It is hard to part with things, and I realise it’s especially hard to part with things that are inherited, but I try to be ruthless these days. If it’s a book I haven’t read yet then the question is “How long have I owned this without reading (or watching if it’s a DVD) it and am I ever likely to?” If it’s something I have read/watched then it’s a question of “Am I ever likely to look at this again?”

I’m not nearly ruthless enough though, especially with regard to DVDs…

It isn't as if I am destroying books, other people will have a chance to buy them and read them. They are more likely to be read if I do get rid of them.

I have selected 50 books so far, half way to my target.

I find it's always harder than it looks to get rid of books I've had attachments to. But if there are books I know I won't read again, I usually tend to give them away. We only have one used-books store in town, but I've only ever used it once because I don't like the system they use. You can only get store credit for getting more books there, not cash, which kind of defeats my purpose if my plan is to get rid of books. It wouldn't be so bad if they'd give you an option to get cash for them knowing they'd go to good homes. Sometimes a fair trade isn't just another book.

91 books so far. Almost there.

Of course I have to remove all these books from my LibraryThing catalogue. I will have to do that over the weekend.

My main reaction to reading this thread is that, if you have to ask our opinion about a particular book, you don't love (or use) it enough to keep it.

I was in the same position some years ago; we had so many books and bookcases that we had to cull several hundred books. Husband and I both had issues with getting rid of books but we managed it and the local charity shops were very grateful. Now it's a continual new books in, old books out situation. We won't ever stop buying books, particularly non-fiction and second hand ones which we can't get for the Kindle, but we won't be overrun with books again. We've also gone back to using the local libraries a lot more.

What an excellent criterion to use!

I was thinning out my own book garden last week and found myself hesitating over several.

I should also apply that one to my clothes closet as it is time for that too.

I actually have a much easier time getting rid of clothes than books. I love the idea of a book far more than e-books.

Good luck MissChicken - I am sure you will feel better for having accomplished your task but I know it is a difficult one to achieve!
