Can DS9 Ever Be Surpassed or Remade (Think J.J. Abrams Reboot Universe)

The IDW comic "The Q Gambit" showed the alternate reality versions of the DS9 crew, and naturally, as they have not been recast for a movie, they looked like their prime universe counterparts.

I think it can, but (like any other property) a DS9 reboot has to be written and directed well. It can still have action, but that doesn't mean it can't have strong character moments as well.

If TPTB wanted to make a station-based Trek in the future, they should just make something new set in a different spatial or temporal context.

DS9 is what it is. It shouldn't --and really cannot --be re-done.

Now...a Voyager-like concept could easily be reintroduced and re-executed differently. But then again, it would be more effective to just make something new.

But DS9 had it's moment, and we should be thankful we'll always have it.

I think the new CBS streaming show will end up hewing more closely to DS9 than anybody is expecting. At least in tone. The little hints they give. Multiple ships and crews, but not an anthology show and not the between movies time period, make me think it will be dialed a bit more into the politics of the Federation and the operations of Starfleet. So we may yet be surprised.

I hope and pray that Paramount does not reboot "Next Generation", "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" into a series of movies either produced or directed by J.J. Abrams. That man has done enough damage with "The Original Series" and "Star Wars".

Surpassed? I would genuinely hope so. It's a great series, and deserves to be bettered.

Remade/rebooted? Of course. And hope it would be better than original. Whether it should or could is another issue.

I guess it could, and there is a showrunner in place that has a chance to make Discovery better than DS9, but DS9 was a show that was way ahead of it's time I don't think it will be overtaken anytime soon. Even with Discovery, it will take years to see what kind of legacy that show will have.

With what we know now about Discovery, it wouldn't be surprising to produce a spinoff after a couple of seasons set on a space station. Strip out the wormhole, the dominion and bring it back to it's essence and make it a new show.

I don't know if I quite agree with that comment, considering that "Babylon 5" was more or less doing the same and on a more extensive scale than "DS9". Like I've said before, I thought "DS9" had the potential to be the best series in the franchise. But its occasional bouts of questionable writing - especially when it tried to handle the Dominion War - made it difficult for me to view it in that manner.
