Call of Duty: Black Ops

Maps have only been released for XBox so far. Ugh. Can't wait for PS3.

The recent update has really screwed me up. They made INCREDIBLE changes to the grip of the AK74, and now my aim's all off. Granted, I wouldn't mind if they made some changes to it, but the change they made was pretty big. I guess I'll go back to FAMAS or try the Commando again.

Not played the zombie map yet, though. Will probably have a bash at it later.

Fantastic map.

Kind of a mix between Der Riese and Kino. Starts off in B&W until you switch the power on.

Only had a quick go on solo, got to round 6 and then got mullered!

Is Black Ops even any good? I haven't really heard much about it.

I think it's a very good game, but it seems to depend on whether you're getting it for the 360 or the PS3. The PS3 version's been plagued with problems since release day and it doesn't look like things are really getting much better. I'll stress that this is based on what friends tell me as I haven't played the PS3 version myself.

The 360 version, appears to be much more stable and is a pretty enjoyable game.

It's a matter of opinion.

For me...

Zombie mode is entertaining for a while then quickly gets boring.

The campaign is quite enjoyable and well done.

The multi-player is... well, I'd rather play MAG. But I've grown incredibly bored of MAG after a year off and on.

Just bumping this to let everyone know that it's double XP weekend again on Black Ops this weekend (4th-7th March). From Twitter...

#CODBlackOps Double-XP will begin at approx. 10am PST on Friday, March 4th. It ends the same time Monday. All Platforms.

I change my emblem every prestige. I've had:
Jerry Garcia smiley face
Beasty on a Rooftop
The Dark Side of the Moon cover
The Watchmen "bullet hole" smiley
The Xmen logo
and now, the Babylon 5 shield logo.

Love making emblems!

Against my better judgment I tried playing this game again, on Xbox. New complaints specific to that version: the auto-aim is way too strong... it's much more noticeable, it's borderline aimbot country. It has really neutered aiming as a skill in these games. It seems to compensate for recoil pretty well too... it's almost like they added recoil to compensate for auto aim, so if you turn off auto aim you're at even more of a disadvantage. Ugh.

I was shocked to see on Xbox that the game doesn't hold a constant 60fps. The PC frame stutters were baffling, and they don't really exist here. But, I do see it drop to 30fps occasionally... more often when I'm host. The MW games were solid frames across the board as far as I can remember on console.

The only things that are actual improvements over MW2 are the way they credit kills of Last Stand users, and the fact that they fixed quickscoping, which was a console only type of problem (thanks to overzealous autoaim assist).

The maps, they pretty much all suck. Nuketown is a joke. Jungle sucks. The snowy one with the broken satellite dish is ok. The one with the launching missile is ok. Cracked sucks. Havana sucks. Crisis sucks. Firing range is ok. Grid sucks, Hanoi REALLY sucks. Summit REALLY sucks... Villa is ok... the rest I don't remember off the top of my head, but probably fall into the suck category.

There is not a single map in the game that is as good as Favela, Wasteland, Overgrown, Storm, Terminal, Bailout, Afghan, Estate, Invasion, Sub Base, or Quarry. Maybe even Scrapyard as well.

The animations are incredibly laggy... even if you are host. For instance, enemies will start firing about 30 percent of the way into their reload animation... then you watch the killcam and see them merrily reload, line up a shot for a good second, and finally open fire. The same sort of thing happens with the knifing. You can't react to things you see in the game, you can't trust that a guy who appears to not be facing you is actually not facing you.

On Xbox, at least in TDM, everyone and their sister just camps a corner. I have not seen a case of camp-itis infecting a game this bad in well... ever.

Everything I ever said about poor hit detection in previous posts still applies. In MW2 and I imagine MW1 before it I could rattle off two bursts from an M16, know for a fact that the guy is going to be dead, because I saw I was accurate on the screen, and start reloading. Here that just doesn't seem to work. Even when I get hit markers. I literally once got 3 hit markers in a row with the M16, at VERY close range, where it's certainly in the 40 damage per shot area. The guy did not die. Even if only one shot out of each burst hit him, which makes no sense since we were five feet apart and fuck you, my aim is awesome! Anyway, even if, that bitch should've been dead. Rubbish I say!!! Rubbish!

I REALLY hate how you have to do challenges for the pro perks, then buy them on top of doing the challenge. AUTO SPEND MY MONEY FUCKERS.

I don't like the perks. I need to unlock Ninja Pro... maybe I'll like that... but SitRep Pro was easily my favorite perk in MW2... it was severely underused... which I guess I understand since Ninja completely counters the best part of the perk, and there was no real counter to Ninja. But still, the footstep adjustments + being able to see Claymores was perfect for me... so naturally whereas lots of perks got minor tweaks, they had to completely blow mine up. Hacker Pro sounds completley useless. As for Ninja, footsteps are so weak in this game anyway... I understand not being able to hear them when there are raging gun battles nearby. Not that realism always makes a better game, but I can accept that.. but I can't accept a killcam where I am moving forward Ninja style and some ass-hat with Marathon sprints and knifes me without me hearing a single step while literally no gunshots are happening.

The sound in this game is severely fucked. You can located gunfire, and you can locate RC-XDs by sound... and that's about it. The dog sounds are screwed up, footsteps are completely inconsistent as to whether they even work, etc...

I get the feeling I need to try Ghost Pro/Warlord Pro(sight/suppressor)/Ninja Pro. Though getting used to iron sights and using Sleight of Hand Pro is surely better long term. And maybe tactical mask pro, with warlord pro's extra concussion grenade it seems pretty abusable.

Or I can just go load up MW2, which plays like butter. :techman:

Yeah, CoDBlOps is my last CoD game. I switched to Battlefield Bad Company 2 and am much happier. It's not perfect, but damn if it isn't the frustrating pain in the balls that this game is.

Playing a bit more. Got a Xim3... and some logitech hardware (G13 and G500) to go along with it. Pretty cool, makes FPS on console more fun... probably could be considered cheating, but hey, what the hell do I care?

Started doing better once I adjusted my play style. A bit more cautious. Using claymores even though they're completely lame. Can't beat 'em, join em. Saves some rage.

Lag and knifing are totally screwed up. The M16 is a piece of crap in this game. I can hit someone with a burst in their chest at point blank range and get pretty much nothing for my trouble. I've been doing some silenced/red dot M16, ghost, warlord, and ninja... it works ok but you just feel like you're getting hosed.

Been playing a lot with the G11, same sort of setup but with sleight of hand instead of warlord. That thing outclasses the M16 pretty much across the board. Even though it does sometimes take an extra burst or two to kill, kind of like the M16... but it seems like you don't get screwed as much. The ammo capacity is ridiculous. It's pretty much like getting scavenger perk for free since it's really hard to run out of ammo with that many rounds.. AK7 and Commando are pretty good too.

Speaking of the useless M16. Semtex seems pretty useless. I've been back in fragville and better for it. Oh bouncing cooked 'nades off corners, how I've missed you.

Second chance pro is total garbage. Also, one time I got knifed right after shooting the guy, which is completely ridiculous. He didn't even have to wait till he hit the ground like he would to shoot. Ridiculous.

Along those same lines in a Gun Game I got totally screwed. So I hit some guy at point blank range, the game itself says that I killed him with it, and that I died from my own explosion. Then it says HUMILIATED as though I got knifed, and I end up spawning with the weapon that comes before the RPG, some sniper rifle I think. What in the.... I basically got screwed out of two kills, and of course, I lose by two in the end...

I like the replay feature. It's pretty cool, I can no longer say Treyarch never did anything good for CoD. I like the timeline with kills and deaths marked. I wish it would keep showing my KDR once I move something into my showcase or whatever. I have to manually label them so I have an idea of wtf they are and if my new games are better to swap in. I think I'm going for best KDR... well, not quite since I ignored my 16-1 game... if you're not first place on your team in kills then it just implies that you're a camping wimp. But lots of 28-7 type games and a 30-8 FFA in there for now. It gives you an incentive to try to beat your best games.

Also, I like how there is the lobby leaderboard that defaults to weekly stats. De-emphasizing overall KDR is good. Makes you feel like you can screw around a bit more. If you tank one week you can focus and try to max out your ratio the next week without having to be in douche mode full time. Yeah, I shouldn't care about pointless stuff like kill death ratio, but I can't help it, I start getting really grumpy if I go negative, even, or very slightly positive. I mean, I'm playing with a god damn 5700DPI mouse against 12 year olds with Xbox controllers. I should be getting 2.00 in my sleep!

Oh, and sound is still totally screwed up. If you're running Marathon style, after a little bit you just stop making noise. After using it and seeing it first person I can at least make sense of some of the stupid killcams where marathoners run up right behind me, but it's still complete bullshit. It reminds me of when people sold sound cards advertising how many 'voices' they had, which I think was just how many sound samples they could play simultaneously. It's almost like blops just has a really low 'voices' setting and prioritizes what sounds you actually do get to hear really poorly.

MW2 is still a superior game, but at least I'm finally regularly having fun with Blops.

Anyone still playing?

Any thoughts on the new map pack preview?
[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9gh-LsVGX4&feature=player_embedded[/yt]

I like the look of it.

Zoo sounds kind of like the DLC Carnival from MW2. I didn't like Carnival, but I think the basic concept could work better so we'll see.

Convoy looks decent, Red Dawn-style... it just seems a little strange to throw it into Black Ops. This kind of map fits in more with MW2 from a story logic perspective.

Hotel looks a lot like Rainbow Six: Vegas. If done right should be great CQB opportunities.

Stockpile looks a lot more like a COD1/2 type map, quaint, villagey...

Nice variety overall. The $15 price tag hurts, as usual, but I'll pay the premium because I always go back to CoD whether I want to or not.

I actually just got the First Strike pack this weekend on Xbox. First TDM on Kowloon I went 28-1. Two sets of split screeners on the opposing team . Pretty surprised that I managed that regardless running all over the place without any concept of what was where. I'm shocked I didn't get any deaths from accidentally running off the edge of the building or something!

After playing map pack 1 a bit more I have to say that I like Stadium but am not completely sold on all the others just yet. Berlin is kind of cool in that COD1 kind of way. Discovery I only played twice, never seemed to get into the rotation. I'm still too confused playing it to know if I like it or not. Despite the success on it, I don't love Kowloon. The zip line is stupid. Maybe it will grow on me. I didn't like Favela in MW2 at first and eventually it became one of my favorites.

With the PSN down, I've been amusing myself with hordes of Nazi zombies. I'm not even sure if I can get the trophy for buying all weapons of the wall while it's down but I've been trying. Sadly, best I can do solo is round 12 and they got me before I could buy the last bloody weapon. Grr!

The trailer for the zombie map in the new Escalation pack is several flavours of awesome...

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_Cx82OFXM0&feature=channel_video_title[/yt]

Robert Englund, Danny Trejo, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michael Rooker, AND George Romero! Can it be May 3rd now please?

Damn. That does look good. Now the PSN just needs to get fixed.

As for my solo Zombie runs lately... dammit! Made round 13 yesterday and thought I had bought all the weapons but... turns out there are claymores in Kino Der Toten. WTF? All this time playing that map and neither my friends nor I knew.

It's currently Double-XP on the 360 (and the PC, I assume) for the release of the Escalation pack. It's also been extended until Tuesday to celebrate Black Ops getting its 10 millionth fan on Facebook.

Josh Olin tweeted that there are plans for Double-XP on the PS3 when PSN returns.
