Call of Duty 5 confirmed as...

If they REALLY wanted to do something different they'd let you play as a German or Japanese soldier.

That'd really make the PC crowd scream. :)

It's been done though. As a single player game with a narrative, CoH:OF features a German campaign where you fight the allied forces during Market Garden.
That said, it'd be interesting to see more of that... but I don't think anyone has the balls to do it.

Honestly, I have no problem with COD5 going back to WWII.

Here's why.

1. I don't want Treyarch screwing up all the good Infinity Ward did with COD4

2. I don't want another COD4 part 2 right now.
I want Infinity Ward to take their time and give us another great product.

3. I don't mind the south pacific setting, it may be interesting, lets give them a chance and find out.
I would have love for them to explore more with the Russians defending Stalingrad ala Enemy at the Gates fashion.
I think it would be cool to play a Vasily Zaytsev, sniper type character defending the city, War of the Rats style.

Lastly, I'm so tired of people repeating that there are too many WWII games because they read it somewhere else.

Do a little more reading and you will find there are actually about 2X more war games set in a modern day setting than in WWII.

I'm happy it's back in WWII. Don't care what anyone says, I never get tired of WWII shooters. Had zero interest in playing CoD 4 as I have zero interest in post-WWII warfare!

Shame. COD4 is an excellent online multiplayer game-although most of us who have been playing since the beginning have reached skill levels that discourage newbies when they run into us.

So true! I took a break from COD4 to play GTA4, and now that I've gone back to COD I'm getting my ass handed to me non-stop.

I have no problem with a new WW2 game IF it does something new for single player mode, 4 player co-op is nice but when people have completed it or better games come out the co-op mode dies (see Army of 2)

Treyarch's COD games (COD2: big red one and COD3) were very average in single player mode, seen it all before tbh. There is a new brothers in arms game out soon and that does something different to the standard WW2 template game.

Pretty sure it was Activisions choice to return to WW2 as they weren't convinced with the modern day setting (this was before COD4 was released) IW were allowed to change the setting because they have more clout.

Also if Treyarch could of changed the setting, it does not mean they would have to make COD4 part 2...

God, hell no. Stalingrad's been SO overdone by the CoD series. They just need to give it a rest. So many other areas of the Eastern Front to do. I much preferred the Kursk/Kharkov levels in United Offensive. How about a summer/fall 1941 level where you're just struggling to not get your ass handed to you?

Really, United Offensive is my favorite of the WWII entries. No Normandy, no Stalingrad FTW!

I think it's more about a contempory setting that people can relate too and developers are free to create new scenarios where so many games have done world war II and all of it's battles countless times. Developers can really create new battles in WWII that never happened. I mean, how many times can you storm Normandy with 100 different games?

Every year you can count on a MoH game... and this year we have BiA coming as well. Modern day is starting to happen, but it's more sci-fi-ish than anything else.
I have no doubt that there are special forces out there, but I can't imagine that there's anything that approaches the Tom Clancy games. You're also not going to send in three guys to take out hundreds of men ala Rainbow Six: Vegas.
It's just that pure modern day combat, ala BF2 or CoD4, is something that's fairly lacking right now.

there's plenty of WW2 no-one's made a game of yet...

Greece. SAS in North Africa. British in Burma/Singapore. Nationalist Chinese. Soviets vs Finns. Norway. St Nazaire raid. Russians invading Sakhalin. Poland.

i see potential for at least 2 more CoD games in WW2...

CoD2 was set in North Africa, although it wasn't the SAS. To be honest, it was much better that way. Given that WW2 is the last time you had two nearly equally matched armies face up against each other with large scale infantry battles, you want to feature the regular army.
That was my problem with the earlier MoH games. It was always special ops. I'm surprised they didn't make you go kill Hitler yourself.

Pacific campaign has been largely untapped, but one is because of the whole Japanese thing. Fine. The other is I don't think most Americans give a shit about the Pacific campaign. Just look at other media... it's always Europe and D-day. Between Thin Red Line, Pearl Harbor/Tora! Tora! Tora! and the two Clint Eastwood films, I can't think of any other movies that touch the Pacific campaign. The European campaign on the other hand? You have serious stuff like Saving Private Ryan to stupid silly stuff like Hogan's Heroes... not to mention the countless hours of TV like Combat!

That's why I love the Forgotten Hope mod for Battlefield 1942. It covers all that "obscure" stuff!

Seriously. I've got so much rust it's not even funny. My first game back I managed 3 kills and 12 deaths in Chinatown. :wtf:

I'm worst when I switch from stints of playing Halo 3 to CoD4 and vice versa.

When I'm thinking I'm zooming I'm really throwing a grenade in one, then I'm doing the opposite in the other - making me suck regardless of what I'm playing

I can't wait for this game. I enjoyed Call of Duty 3 (especially the multiplayer, I had a ton of fun online) and I'm glad they're finally getting to the Pacific Theater.

Call of Duty: World at War

yep no number which is good cause COD 5 sounds stupid and here is the lowdown from the final COD game being made by Treyarch who made all the COD console versions of 1 & 2 plus COD 3...
The lack of number has nothing to do with the game itself, it seems that Activision is no longer numbering sequels, for example Guitar Hero 4 is called Guitar Hero World Tour.

Final COD game by Treyarch? Why's that?

Response to COD 3 by the fans was quite mild but the main reason is that the contract is up and I think Activision/Infinity Ward realise that if they want to keep the franchise fresh they need bigger breaks inbetween games than just 1 year as come the release of this game (most likely at Christmas) it will be 3 games in 3 years.
I haven't seen anything about this being the final Treyarch Call of Duty game. Have a source on that? With Activision's current EA like release schedule I find it hard to believe that they would release a new CoD game every other year.

There was the rumour that IW would be the exclusive developer of CoD games, but I think that was quashed.

Unless COD 5 somehow becomes best selling COD game, IW will have the sole rights to COD and its more there game then Treyarch.

According to whom though?
Honestly, I think the average fan doesn't even know the difference between the CoD games... just like most of them didn't probably notice that Neversoft took over Guitar Hero. And hell, given that this will be based on the CoD4 engine, there's no reason that the average consumer doesn't just think this is a natural sequel.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to see IW take over CoD for good, but I just can't believe it. It would have to tank as much as Tony Hawk for them to do that, I would think.
