Burning Dreams

For all those saying that Pike doesn't mention Archer, I'd point out that he doesn't mention the man he succeeded as Enterprise captain, Robert April. I would have expected at least a mention about April.

Given the scope of the book, I chose to set the scenes on Enterprise well into Pike's captaincy. There was no scene depicting his taking the ship over from April, so I didn't find it necessary to mention the previous captain.

Besides, to the best of my knowledge, Kirk doesn't mention Pike until "Menagerie," when Mendez asks if he ever met him, and Kirk replies "I took over the Enterprise from him," indicating that not even Starfleet officers remember exactly who commanded which ship when.

That's what I thought. It wasn't a complaint, just an observation.

Getting back to something I posted earlier, I'm glad you kept Number One's name as Number One. I couldn't get used to Lt. Commander Lefler. It just made her an ordinary character. I liked DC Fontana's backstory that she was a genetically engineered creation, even though DS9 mentioned that sort of thing was abolished by the Federation.

Exactly.

Exactly.

Genetic engineering could explain why she was so boring.

Garamet: Burning Dreams is only the third Trek novel I've ever read (after the two Vanguard books). I liked it very much. The ending, with Talosian society based on Pike and Vina, reminded me a bit of Galaxy Quest!

Here's a ship's patch I made about 5 years ago for my website. It's not my best work, but I like the name too.

I'm just about to start reading Chapter 14. I'm liking Burning Dreams. From what we've seen of him on TOS and read of him in the other stories, this feels like it should for Chris Pike. His childhood was very well done. Yes it did start off slow, but it picked up and kept my interest. The part on the USS Alderan really showed his command abilites. All in all it's a good read.

I finally got around to reading Burning Dreams this week and just finished it today. This is the novel I was hoping Garth of Izar would be...a study of one character's life.

Which is, in fact, based on the backstory Majel Barrett created for herself when preparing to play Number One. Gene Roddenberry had wanted the character to be enigmatic and unexplained, and deliberately didn't give much about her in the proposal/(future) Writer's Bible.

I seem to remember one of Signet's "Best of Trek" articles speculating Number One's origins, similarly suggesting genetic engineering. It was also suggested in BoT that Number One and Nurse Chapel might be sisters. (Austin Powers would probably call Christine, "Number Two".)

IIRC, Majel formalized the backstory a little more during her years of answering fan mail that came into Lincoln Enterprises, and fan questions at conventions - and discussed her ideas with DC Fontana when DC was drafting "Vulcan's Glory". DC mentions the discussion in the Afterword of the new edition.

Just finished Burning Dreams - couldn't put it down. Fabulous read which explores the Characters of Chris Pike , Vina and the Talosians excellently. This time jumping story telling reminded me of Strangers from the Sky in delivery. That book was a winner and so is this one.

Cheers for the read MWB. More Classic trek please....

Just finished this story myself----it's truly a standout.

I'd say this book does for Pike what A Stitch In Time did for Garak, and that's no idle praise.

Highly recommened to anyone who's ever wondered about Christopher Pike.

I have to add my praise for this book as well... it's a great read!!!

It's the first book I've read in a long time, where I was sad to finish reading it. :)

Just started reading it. People were discussing on another thread about this being a post Talos story with Pike which intrigued me.
I'm about a 100 pages in but I like to think the starship orbiting Elysium is a Bonaventure Class.vessel. The timeline would make it fit in nicely.

Lots of really bad science in there, though. Bad enough to repeatedly throw me out of a really good story (I'd forgotten just how good), when I spent a good chunk of the weekend re-reading it. E.g., you can't vent radiation into space; you can only vent radioactive gases and aerosols.
