Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - First Time Viewer

I think this was the second. The scene in the library in the first season finale was also kind of a gut punch. This one was a little heavier though.
Do you mean when she walks in on Angel and Giles talking about the prophecy? Yeah, that was one of Season 1's most powerful moments, and SMG was brilliant in it.

I didn't realize Angelus in was Season 2, I thought he in was Season 3 or 4.

Phases was decent, but a noticeable step down. I guess it was inevitable, but I think it would have been a lot better if they hadn't included the hunter A-hole. Other than being a sexist, he served nothing to the plot, and after what Buffy went through the episodes before, it felt like the only reason the guy was there was to show your typical sexist guy trope. Other than that, more development for Oz and Willow continues to be an awesome human being.

Also, nice call back to one of the first episodes of the series with the cheerleading trophy.

A couple clunkers coming up, but then you'll be at on of my favorites: Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.

That episode is definitely peak toxic Xander for this season. Magic rohypnol, played as a joke.

Well, I made to the first episode I can click the spoiler code thing. It was ok, but it took Xander's annoying tendencies up to 11. I did, however, like what this episode did for Cordy. I really didn't like her last season, but if there is an understated MVP this year, it might be Cordelia. Her scene at the end of the episode actually salvaged it to merely average rather than dumb.

Passion

Well, after two episodes that were kind of out there, we are back to the main arc, and boy are we ever back. I remember how happy I was when Spike was introduced but man Angel is one hell of a villain. It's not good just to kill Buffy. What Angel is doing is a whole lot worse, mentally torturing her. He is getting into that "Villain you love to hate" territory and this was an excellent follow up to the Innocence/Surprise story. They really aren't afraid to kill anyone on this show either. While I saw Jenny's death coming, how it was done and the emotional impact it left behind was immense. Also, having Angel kind of narrate the episode at the beginning and end really punctuated how great this episode was. It's going to be a hell of a final 5 episodes.

Passion is a great example of why it pays to have an Oscar-winning 'script doctor' as your showrunner. The lone-credited writer is now working as a scenario guy for effing Guild Wars.

Though I have to say, as good as it is, whenever I see it, I can help but see the untapped potential. It still has the lingering 'work-in-progress' feel to it. It lacks that je ne sais quoi of the series greats.

My old lady and I looked at each other in the eyes this morning, and said almost simultaneously "I don't like Anne, I don't want to watch Anne"

"Sigh"

This thread provoked a binge, and we are pulling ahead.

Enjoy the view Tamalok.

Can you expand on this a little more? What do you mean untapped potential.

It's interesting, right now my reaction to Buffy and Joyce is kind of the same reaction I had with Oliver and Thea in Arrow in terms of secret identity. If there was one untapped potential I saw in Passion it was I wonder if Buffy should have revealed her secret to her mother. It's bound to happen eventually, but right now their safety is as risk and Joyce believes it's an old stalker boyfriend. Also, I think it was you who recently said that Buffy and Joyce's relationship has been strained lately (And I actually kept going back to Bad Egg watching these episodes last night and how Joyce laid it on pretty thick in terms of grounding Buffy, which I guess has been dropped) and I keep wondering if it's time to let Joyce know what really is happening.

Basically, there's an indescribable "it" factor to Buffy. It's a combination of a 100 different tiny, little things - both artistic and technical - that make it stand out from the pack. It's the reason it's not just a great TV series but a seminal TV series. But with WML and Innocence and Passion it's clear they're still tweaking the formula.

I'll I can really say is you'll know it when you see it. And soon.

The only other not-too-spoilery comparison I can make is, while it did some great things, Angel never achieved or "found" that extra bit of poetry or artistry or whatever you want to call it. Which - for me at least - is a big reason why Buffy always shows up on greatest all-time lists and it doesn.t.

:shifty:

Killed by Death was pretty enjoyable, actually made better by Cordy. I already said she might be the underrated star of the season, but she was on fire in this episode, from her "tactful" conversation with Buffy about her cousin to getting it on with the security guy. Also, I thought Kripsy Kreame was a big thing in the 2000s (I'm a Giants fan and Pac Bell Park had Krispy Kreme donuts as a big thing when it opened) but here it was as some nice product placement in 1998. It's not Game of Thrones Starbucks level funny but I was amused.

Anyway, not too much to really say about this one other than it was a nice Monster of the Week story. Yes the series is getting more serialized, but I am appreciating the self contained stories that make individual episodes more memorable.

This episode is one of my season 2 favourites. Der Kindestod was properly creepy and was a nice play on the boogeyman trope I thought.

I was reading some reviews and a common comment was this episode had a Nightmare on Elm Street Vibe. I don't watch horror movies so I wouldn't know, but yeah I did find Der Kindestod creepy.

I don’t find Buffy scary but there are a few demons throughout the show that genuinely creep me out, to the point where I have to watch most of the episode with my eyes shut. Der Kinderstod is one of them.

I do like the ending where the gang is in Buffy’s bed and she receives a gory drawing from the little boy in the hospital.

I don’t find Buffy all that scary either. I’m not a horror fan so one of the trepidations I had was how horror filled this show would be but I remember it being on a network for the teenage demographic so it couldn’t have been that bad. If there is a valid comparison, I would say Buffy is like a tame episode of X-files (Meaning not “Home”). Having the eyes burst out toward that kid in this recent episode was a little more above where Buffy typically is at this point though.

I too liked the ending with the gang just there and Joyce being an annoyed mother.

Off the top of my head other than this episode, one from Season 4 and another from Season 7 Buffy never really emphasized the horror aspects of the series. I've always considered Buffy and Angel to be superhero series with fantasy elements rather than horror series despite the vampires and demons.
