Bryan Fuller is Showrunner on New Trek Series

I loathed and despised the idea of a Kurtzman run show, but hearing Fuller's name is frankly the first glimmer of hope I've had for Trek in years.

Kurtzman is executive-producing many shows these days (Hawaii Five-O, Sleepy Hollow, Scorpion, Limitless), and his attention for the next few years is going to be dominated by the re-remake of The Mummy that he's directing and the larger Universal Monsters shared universe that he's co-developing. So he won't have the time to be very hands-on with this show. He'll probably co-create it and co-write the pilot with Fuller, then step back and leave it to Fuller to run the show.

Good news is that he prefers the original series to the sequels and that they're calling this a "reboot." :techman:

Wow, what wonderful news! Hannibal was an amazing series. We should be so lucky if Star Trek 2017 is only half as good. Bringing this kind of writing quality to Trek can only be a good thing.

Plus, this makes it much more likely that we'll finally see LGBT characters on Trek! Wohoo!

Fuller also wrote for the first season of Heroes, including Company Man which was probably the best episode of the series.

Exactly.

I think/hope it'll be primarily run by Bryan Fuller, with Kurtzman having a hand here and there, but more in a "just to attach my name to the project" role à la Gene Roddenberry with TNG or J. J. Abrams with every show he's done since Lost.

Bryan Fuller had a hand in some of Voyager's most memorable episodes: Barge of the Dead, Raven, etc. Not exactly the MOST popular, but still some top tier. Then there was Workforce, Friendship One, and some other duds, but I would expect some network interference in some of that. I was a big fan of most of Hannibal, except for that first half of season 3. I think we'll be getting some stellar TV. I doubt he is just a hired gun.

The dire situation in the VOY writers room wouldn't have helped either.

Off topic, but Roddenberry was heavily involved with TNG until his deteriorating mental health.

Yes Voyager had nearly constant problems in the writers room its entire run added to UPN executives constantly poking their noses into creative decisions. I'm very optimistic about Fuller being show runner! To me it looks like CBS is doing everything it can to make sure this show is a success.

LOL. You make it sound as if executives are not normally poking their noses into creative decisions. Guess what, executives poke their noses on great shows as well, that is not a bad thing. Executives, producers, writers, and the production staff are all on the same team.

I was a cautiously optimistic when a new series was announced. But I thought with all of the great television that exist today, would Star Trek really work anymore. But holy shit does this make any fears I had vanish. I love Bryan Fuller! If he brings half the creativity and excellent writing he had for Pushing Daisies and Hannibal we are seriously in for a treat!

As was explained to me from a good source, it's in its own universe. But do we call it the Kurtzmanverse or the Fullerverse? Votes?

This is so exciting! I was already feeling pretty optimistic about the new show but Fuller leading the writing room is just the icing on the cake. I can't wait to see what he has in store!

Is it too soon for my Hannibal/Star Trek crossover fanfic?*

*checks Internet, probably already exists
