Bryan Fuller is Showrunner on New Trek Series

Bryan Fuller being named showrunner of the new Star Trek series is fantastic news. Bryan "gets" Trek. He's the creator behind some of the most inventive television of the past decade, including Pushing Daisies and Hannibal. He cut his teeth on Deep Space Nine and Voyager. He's been campaigning for this job for years. He's "one of us". I can't think of anyone I'd rather have at the helm, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

I'm so happy someone 'from the old guard' will be taking the helm of the new show. Fuller is a great writer and I was a fan of Hannibal. He's also been vocal about DS9 being his favorite spin-off version of Trek which bodes will for a more deeper, character based Trek!

I'm also excited because Fuller is openly gay so perhaps we'll finally get some LGBT representation on the new show!

I loathed and despised the idea of a Kurtzman run show, but hearing Fuller's name is frankly the first glimmer of hope I've had for Trek in years. I feel confidence in knowing that there will be someone who has a decent idea of what Trek needs to be on board.

According to ew.com, he also said back in 2013 that he wanted to set a new series on Reliant, stating: “I think let that be the movies and let that be their story. I would love to do something on the Reliant … I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that’s who I would love to have, you know Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show and but that’s in the future to be told.”

Hey, remember when Axanar supporters accused CBS of filing suit so they could steal Alec's script and material for a new show because "they had no idea what to do" and that "Axanar was what fan really wanted"?

So much for that line of reasoning...

"On 2 March 2009 Fuller told iF Magazine that he is pushing for a new Star Trek TV series based on "old style" Star Trek. In the interview he stated that "I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams' team I want to create another Star Trek series and have an idea that I'm kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the '60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin." [1]

In 2013, Fuller added "I think there's something very exciting about the new J.J. Abrams-verse, and there's also kind of an interesting reinvention. How would The Next Generation evolve from that? Where would that be? Where would that go? But there's also... Star Trek is such a big universe, and there are so many places to go with it. I have a very specific idea that I would love to do. We'll see if I ever get the opportunity." [2]

Still repping Trek after all these years (some in here are going to hate that jacket though) :p

Bryan Fuller had a hand in some of Voyager's most memorable episodes: Barge of the Dead, Raven, etc. Not exactly the MOST popular, but still some top tier. Then there was Workforce, Friendship One, and some other duds, but I would expect some network interference in some of that. I was a big fan of most of Hannibal, except for that first half of season 3. I think we'll be getting some stellar TV. I doubt he is just a hired gun.

Excellent news. He should take a leaf from Pushing Daisies and have the main character touch televised Star Trek and bring it back to life.

He's a Star Trek fan, he's written for past shows, he has showrunner experience already, and I was a big fan of Pushing Daisies. Haven't seen Hannibal but I hear good things.

What I'm trying to say is bring it on! Can't wait to hear what this nu-nu-Trek will be like.
