Bring back Crucible!

Drizzt

I have been made aware that the one-volume republication of David R. George III's "Crucible" Trilogy (including new short stories) will not be making it to the publisher, as of now.
I am extremely, profoundly disappointed. The "Crucible" trilogy, in my opinion, was one of the best sets of Trek Lit. written to date. I would adore having a single volume trade paperback (or hardback, for that matter) of this work in my library. And, new material?!?!? That would be the best news for Trek Lit. in a good long while.

Anyway, my point in making this post is....what can we, as fans, do to support this work getting to publication? I don't know about doing something cheesy like a petition or anything, but who can we, as fans, contact to voice our opinions? I sincerely doubt that I am the only one who feels this strongly about Mr. George's work. It was an excellently written, passionate piece of literature that evoked strong emotions. I sincerely hope that this work gets to publication, because it will be a severe loss to the Trek community, and to the literary community as a whole, if it does not.

If the economy picks up (because bookstores are taking a beating right now), if the movie's rising tide lifts the boats of Treklit, perhaps Pocket can try again with the Crucible omnibus to coincide with the next film.

Be patient.

It hasn't been said that the book will never happen, but there's an ongoing lawsuit between Harlan Ellison and CBS Consumer Products at the moment, so perhaps Pocket Books is wise in holding off on publishing it for now, since much of "Crucible" springboards off Ellison's TOS episode. Poking the bear is always dangerous.

Excuse me. It's Harlan Ellison(TM). He's trademarked his name, and he'll sue. :guffaw:

Thanks for the info. I didn't know any of that! That's kind of why I posted here, was wondering what the likelihood of that book being published would be, in the future.

Keep me posted. I am a die-hard fan of Mr. George, and that series in particular.

Are we even allowed to write/speak/think his name without paying royalties? :vulcan:

I think he has that stitched on his bed linens and all his business cards

I don't think we're allowed to be on the same planet has him without paying royalties.

All kidding aside though, at least the man has been upfront about what he's in it for: the money.

Personally I would prefer that Pocket use the slot for something else. The Crucible series has already been published and I really don't need a hardcover version, as was planned, even if it contains an additional short story or two. I hate double dipping. It should have been released in hardcover from the beginning rather than as an afterthought. I would have purchased it in hardcover if it had been released that way but I really don't want to purchase the hardcover now that I have the paperback. Even though I loved the series!

^It's not just "an additional short story or two." It's five new stories and a preface, and I believe they add up to a pretty substantial word count. And it's all been written already, so it'd be a shame if it never got published in some form or another.

Amen, brother! Couldn't have said it better myself.

Oh, by the way, I thought that your "Torrent Sea" was one of the most imaginative, and scientifically interesting 'Trek' books I have ever read. I found myself not able to put that book down. I tore through it about a day and a half. Kudos, and excellent work!

Publish the 5 short stores and the preface as an eBook. That would work out quite well (IMHO).

I do think it would sell a lot better if they also announced there would not ever be a paper edition.

Ebook? Nah. Trade paperback only, that's the way to go.
Um.. no. And if you read the other thread on trade paperbacks, you'll find a lot do not like them at all.
