Brilliant But Cancelled

Of the shows I watched (or at least remember watching) that were cut down early...

Alphas
Awake
Boomtown
Breaking In (retooled to death for season two)
Brimstone
The Crazy Ones
Don't Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23 (out of sequence airing really killed all the ongoing storylines)
Eyes
Firefly
Human Target (retooled to death for season two)
Life
The Magnificent Seven
Moonlight
October Road

Was the original "The Prisoner" cancelled? If so, count that as well.

Whether the show was thought to have been canceled, or whether the show was thought to have ended because McGoohan wanted it to end already, it depends on who you ask. It's known that the original conception was for far fewer than the 17 episodes that there are. However, it's not indisputably known how many episodes were contractually agreed to have been produced. If the 17 episodes that exist were the only ones contracted, and if McGoohan wasn't seeking to do any more, which by all accounts he wasn't, then I don't see how the word canceled could apply. On the other hand, if there had been a contract for more episodes, then, yeah, maybe so.

But yes, the original The Prisoner was brilliant, and if it was in fact canceled, count me in on that as well.

It might as well have been a shorter run. Have you ever seen the last episodes filmed for The Prisoner, I mean the ones that were filmed after the set was torn down? A Wild West themed hallucination and a storytelling episode with tenuous connection to the premise? You could tell from those episodes that McGoohan just didn't give a crap, considered the show to be finished and just wanted to get something out to finish the contract.

Yeah, those episodes were awful: I believe you mean "Living in Harmony" and "The Girl Who Was Death". The finale "Fall Out" itself is a mixed bag for me, but it's not the disaster that some sources would have you think.

Still, overall I think the show was brilliant.

If you look at production order, "Many Happy Returns" is #13, and that is IMO one of the very best episodes of the series.

In production order, "Living in Harmony" is #15, "The Girl Who Was Death" is #16, and "Fall Out" is of course #17.

Babylon 5
The Critic
Dollhouse
Farscape
Firefly
Gargoyles
Last Resort
Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles
Terminator: The Sarah Conor Chronicles
Space Above and Beyond
Star Trek: Enterprise
Witchblade

Veronica Mars
Life
Journeyman
Perception
Community

Bummed about Enterprise as well; same with when Futurama was first cancelled.

You're aware that despite being cancelled maybe three times, that the new season of Community is due out any day now?

Community has received acclaim from critics, being ranked in several critics' lists of the best television series in 2010,[3] 2011,[4] and 2012,[5] and has gained a cult following.[6] Following cancelation by NBC in May 2014 after five seasons,[7] Community was renewed for a sixth, 13-episode season by Yahoo! Screen.[8]
Although it's debateable if Yahoo Screens is TV.

Sorry for late reply, been away....

I must have forgotten that. I still count it as being a canceled show as it's no longer on NBC. I guess it is debatable. :)

Okay, now I gotta go read the rest of the thread.

I liked Life too. But if it had gone on too much longer, then Damian Lewis wouldn't have been available for Homeland, and well... ;)

Hey, one or two more seasons would have worked, right?

And I cannot believe I forgot about Awake. That show was so good, and I really wish it could have continued.

The Critic was a gem.

Oh yeah, cartoons!

Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers: EMH, Young Justice

I totally agree, especially Avengers EMH and Young justice. They were just great. I'd also add Wolverine & The X-Men, which I thought was very enjoyable.

For live action shows, its mostly things other people have mentioned.

Firefly
Dollhouse
Crusade
Birds of Prey (ok, this one wasn't great, but it had good elements and maybe another season could have helped the show get better)

^I loved The Critic; it was far more clever than it got credit for.
Yeah it was good for lots of laughs.

Babylon 5

Wasn't cancelled.

JMS always had envisaged it as running for 5 seasons and it did.

The show ran it's natural course.
It still has numerous loose ends though, feels cancelled to me. If that doesn't work for you how about Crusade and Legend of the Rangers, the former was definitely canned, and the latter seemed like some failed pilot film.

I thought that the premise given in A Call to Arms was very strong, but once Crusade was underway, I thought that the show was pointless. It went nowhere and did nothing interesting. They spent way too much time setting everything up, as if the payoff was going to be two seasons down the road. Not bloody likely.

That's my recollection of it, anyway.

Joan Of Arcadia
The Secret Circle
Life Unexpected
ALF
Revolution
Tarzan (WB)
The Carrie Diaries
Terra Nova
Terminator TSCC
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures

ETA: The Crazy Ones! Thanks @Aragorn I also loved Ringer.

Agree that Crusade was canned and not sure of any other show where the producer/creater pulled the plug rather than let the studio interfere any further.

Never seen Legend OF The Rangers.
