News Brent Spiner Returned for "Picard" (and you could do the CGI better in 15 minutes, we get it)

Yeah, I think the hyper-analysis of frame by frame means we miss the forest for the trees, as it were. For me, the visuals need only be good enough to sell what the story is selling. Now, I am admittedly someone who is not big on video quality. VFX do well enough if I move through the story and go "That was a nice scene" versus "What beautiful effects."

So much better than a recast or completely digital character
Except I still think that's what they should have done as opposed to killing Data.

Data: In light of the fact that they're able to quickly construct a human like android body for you to age in, I would also like to finally fulfill my dream of being human. Build a new android body to upload me into. And I don't want to look like a pale copy of Dr. Soong anymore. I'd like to look like 21st century actor Russell Crowe.

Picard: ...

Plot twist, Data becomes 2021 "Oh Lawd he comin'!" Russell Crowe instead of "Maximus" Russell Crowe. Hilarity ensues.

I still don't get why? what is achieved by deepfaking Data with Data?

Is it, that the visibility of the passage of time makes one uncomfortable as it remindes one with one's own mortality and therefore any trace of someone aging has to be eradicated?

I think it would have been fine if they just showed an older version of Data. But that was NOT their intention. They tried to make him look more like in TNG and Nemesis. They just didn't do a good enough job (imo). Just look at the hairline...that's very sloppy work.

And that's a little dissapointing given how much effort they put into the show overall (the cinematography, the sets, the vfx...everything looks great).
he looked like Data. Why isn't that enough?

They'll do better next time (you only need one single Mcguffin to recreate his whole positronic network) and hopefully we'll see Lal too...

"Inheritance" had Geordi refer to an aging program that was mentioned neither before that episode or after. It was almost as if that particular scriptwriter just made it up for that one episode...

In fact it was deliberately added to stir Brent Spiner, who had (then-recently) done an interview where he doubted that he could play Data for too much longer, due to him assuming that Data could not age.
