Exactly. Cheap sets and costumes can be forgiven if the writing and performances are up to par. Besides, it's possible to tell compelling stories in short periods of time. They'll just be different kinds of stories.

This Batman fan film was made in 2003, on a budget of $30,000 and is 8 minutes long. So yeah, CBS/P has laid out generous guidelines if there are people up to the challenge of making good stories instead of 45 minute sizzle reels.
One of the best fan films I've ever seen. The guy playing Batman has the physicality of the Batman in the comics. He doesn't need the armored suit like in the movies. Have you watched the documentary about Dead End called Behind the Mask? I believe it's on Hulu.
I await anything remotely competent from you, having seen your Femtreks work - which is, generally, an embarrassment.
I don't mind waving my own credentials. Made a film with the help of a background painter who I paid $75 to and a translator who I paid $50 to. It's under 2 minutes and was covered by multiple media outlets and garnered over 200,000 views. I did it over the course of a year with no donations.
That's one of my favorite Star Trek fan films.
This was very well done and proves that CBS' guidelines won't be the end of fan films.

I remember seeing that for the first time back when you made it, and I loved it. It's just as good now, and looks great!
Oh the guidelines will end the production of "series" and films which are simulara of the conventional Trek series and movies, but as Klingon Propaganda and Rebel Scum prove, you can do really creative stuff and engaging stuff in short form if you're up for the challenge.
There was also no serious market for fan films 30 years ago.

Forgot about that. I did enjoy that quite a bit. It's a different animal from a full length STC or NV episode, though. Look, if this is how it's gonna be, I'm not complaining. CBS/P has every right to dictate. If people want to view this as a challenge rather than a constraint, great. But I still think it takes a lot of the air out of proverbial the fan-film balloon, as it were, which is exactly the intention.
I just watched this again last week! Quite frankly I'm surprised more films haven't moved to animation, it's cheaper then live action now days. And super easy with tools such as source filmmaker and Adobe's new character animator.
A cool fan film series that is German that has been made with no budget is Star Trek Explorer
They are making their 3rd episode now.

That's what I've been saying about canon/continuity for years!
Well, super easy to get generic actions but not so easy to get good performance. You couldn't easily do a Klingon Propaganda the same way Star Trek Explorer was done.

I'm glad Paramount/CBS has released guidelines. Play by the rules, which are still generous... I mean look... it's like someone I don't know saying that I can use their Ferrari for a day every week, simply because I love those bitchin' cars. I'd say that's pretty generous.
Fan creativity has always been instrumental in keeping Star Trek alive, but it was clear that regulation needed to happen. Raising a million dollars on someone else's property, and proclaiming that you will do it better than they ever could is inviting the person who owns the house to step in and lay down some rules. Hello?
The studio has always been very generous, and in my opinion are still being incredibly tolerant. My advice is to not see the 30 minute limit as a boundary, see it as a creative challenge. Roddenberry's pre Star Trek writing gig was Have Gun Will Travel. Those shows were 22 minutes long, and they were lean, mean and to the point drama.
Believe me, Paramount/CBS does respect and appreciate the fans, and there are many fans of the fans there.

I want to see fan films go back to being fan films. Lately, even as much as I have enjoyed a number of them, they've become more about having the most authentic bridge, and who they can get as a guest star rather than telling a great story in a universe we love. This will force some of them to do that once again.
