I believe so, yep.

There've been rumors and off-hand statements about a fourth movie for a few days, but this is official from Paramount:

PARAMOUNT PICTURES, SKYDANCE AND BAD ROBOT
ANNOUNCE A FOURTH “STAR TREK” FILM

CHRIS PINE AND CAST TO BE JOINED BY CHRIS HEMSWORTH, WHO RETURNS TO THE BLOCKBUSTER FRANCHISE AS GEORGE KIRK

HOLLYWOOD, CA (July 18, 2016) – Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot today announced that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return to the big screen for another voyage.

In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.

Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s “STAR TREK,” will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine.

The remaining cast is expected to return.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

I wonder if they are going to rework the script they were working on for '3'?

Considering that they were going to work Shatner into that one as Old Kirk, one wonders if they couldn't re-tailor that for Daddy Kirk.

No release date yet - it looks very much like they're reviving the abandoned ST3 idea somewhat; hence a fasttrack?.

I wonder if Old Kirk will also appear?

But-- but-- The Talifans? WHAT ABOUT THE TALIFANS?!?

Seriously, I think this is a fantastic idea. Can't wait to see what they do with it. Interesting that not only is Pegg not writing, but neither is Orci. He must really be out now at Bad Robot.

Bob Orci's Star Trek 3 was rumoured to be about humans, Vulcans and a new alien race competing for a time travel device. Perhaps the mechanism initially planned to have Pine and Quinto meet Shatner and Nimoy will be repurposed to have Jim Kirk meet George?

Doesn't look like Doug Jung is involved either. Seems like if they (Paramount) see something in Beyond, they would want to keep the behind-the-scenes team together as much as possible.

At the same time, perhaps they want to fast track for whatever reason and Pegg and Jung will be back on ST5. We will see!

We don't need no steenking time travel: we never saw George Kirk's body.

Nah. We just saw him flying towards a window with flames behind him.

If it's that specific already about pairing up Kirk and his father, I hope it's because they know they have a good story they want to tell. Time travel? Maybe George Kirk didn't die (a stretch given what we saw in ST09) and he's been a captive of the Klingons all this time? So, that would also probably mean Klingons? Maybe George Kirk as a villain of sorts?

Fathers and father figures. Seems to be the underlying current driving the new "Star Trek".

That could change depending on how well Beyond does.

I doubt it if they already hired writers. They must feel awfully good about Beyond to be this deep into planning a sequel.

Funny how a certain segment of fandom was convinced Beyond was a turd and was only going to be released on Blu-ray. I wonder if they are weeping as they clutch their Prime Kirk action figure.

George Kirk has been a key point of this particular story of James Kirk. So much so that its been a big part of the marketing of two out of the three films. And like has been said, father figures in general, with Pike taking a big part of the marketing for STID.

Mirror universe perhaps? One where George lived and commands the Enterprise with Jim at his side? Didn't Chris Pine suggest that's something he'd like to do the mirror universe in these movies?

Yep. Movie heroes come back from worse. As long as George Kirk doesn't have Letty's amnesia.

In that vein, it'd be nice to hear that Lin's directing, but I'm getting a vibe from the behind-the-scenes coverage over the last few months that he may not have been all that comfortable with Paramount's management.

The whole thing with the writing teams seems strange. Maybe when we get more details it will make more sense.

Probably the same people who are still whining about the new ships size.
