So, Alamo Drafthouse (It's a theater here in Austin) was showing Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan for free tonight with a 10 minute preview of the new Star Trek. Naturally... I had to go. So before the showing the writers of the new movie came up on stage to talk about the new movie!!! After they were finished and hyping up Wrath of Khan the credits rolled!

About 5 minutes later the movie started having issues, the sound cut out and the film stopped. The owner of Alamo ran upstairs to see what was going on, and the writers came back on stage to answer questions about the new Star Trek while we waited. A man walked up to the stage carrying a metal case. Leonard Nemoy!

He was excited that we were going to see 10 minutes of the new movie, but had a better idea. Instead he had the new movie in the metal case and we got to see the entire film and it was great!

INSTEAD HE HAD THE NEW MOVIE IN THE METAL CASE AND WE GOT TO SEE THE ENTIRE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE 5 WEEKS EARLY. That's right, Austin, TX was now the WORLD PREMIER of the new Star Trek movie, and it was AMAZING!!!!!!!

Two words: Holy shit. Amazing that they kept this under wraps. With the kind of secrecy Abrams has pulled off, the real film could be about transvestite lounge singers in the 32nd century and we'd never know it until opening day.

They were pretty hardcore about the security. No electronics of any kind, you got waved down with a metal detector before entering. You won't see any bootlegs out of this theater.

Yeah, someone posted pics in another thread of them setting up at the Sydney opera house. It's pretty huge.

Still, I think Nimoy's comment is more than a little insulting. Why on Earth shouldn't we be the first to see the film - Sydney is as good a place as anywhere.
