Brands that were once popular....

I remember Spouse-Reitz. My grandparents used to live near one. Every time we would visit grandma would give my brother and I change to go buy candy. I also bought some of my first comics there from the spinning rack.
Has anyone here mentioned Piggly-Wiggly? We had a few here in the Seattle area. The last one on Aurora Avenue/Hwy 99 closed a few years ago. They always had some odd stuff on the shelves.

Brands that are still around but have long-discontinued products:
Taco Bell's "Bell Beefer". I used to love those.
La Choy's mini egg rolls. I could snack on those forever when I was a kid.

We have a Hard Rock Cafe right in the French Quarter. (a couple of blocks from my gig) I love their mushroom and swiss burgers. Does pretty good business.

There was a Planet Hollywood here in downtown Seattle in the 90s. I remember that the city closed off the street opening day for the celebrities to attend the grand opening. It went belly up a few years later.

Just was at the Planet Hollywood at Downtown Disney a few weeks back. They are going to remodel it soon, making it into The Observatory but still run by Planet Hollywood.

I googled up. It looks like they have fewer locales, none in cities I've been at in recent years.

We also had a Shakey's near my house, but they vanished a few months ago. We found out ironically on the same day we were going to Shakey's to eat.

I really liked Surge Cola when I was in High School. It was discontinued but relaunched as Vault Cola. I guess it's not really a forgotten brand though, as I just read that it's being relaunched this month. So maybe tomorrow I'll take a trip out to the store to see if they have it.

There is an A & W on Highway 101 in Florence, OR that still has the 70s architecture, and is a true drive-IN (not just a drive-through), where you can park your car and place your order over the intercom station at your parking stall, and then the food is brought out to you on a tray that attaches to your car.

I grew up with one of those in my town. To me, that will always be the true A & W experience.

Yes, Sonic is an old brand, and they have brought the "drive-in" scene back into prominence.

But I can't stand their food. :barf:

I remember Shakey's Pizzas. I saw them when I was a wee laddie living out West, and then I didn't see another until about 25 years later in a town in Wisconsin.

The last A&W I remember seeing was way up in the mountains in Colorado....again, probably when I was about 25-30. Chili dogs fell apart easily.

I'm with you there. Their food SUCKS ASS. Their drinks are good in the summertime, especially when they have slushies and shakes on sale. But don't ever eat their food. BLEH.

Watching a commercial for SHAG retirement community has reminded me of Stuart Anderson's Black Angus. It was a chain of steak and seafood restaurants here in the Pacific Northwest. It had the 70s dark interior with wood panelling and the portions were small and over cooked but you couldn't beat the price.

^ There are still seven Black Angus locations in Washington State, and 38 in other states. I don't know if they are directly connected with the operation that Stuart Anderson originally started, or if it's one of those marketing situations with reviving an old, well-known name, but I remember them always being around until now.

They're all connected, guys. I miss the one I used to go to.

We had a Fuddruckers in Charlotte (NC) decades ago. They are long gone.
We have one in Myrtle Beach, always looks packed.
what I miss most on the food side are Wendy's Salad Bars. It was probably a huge pain to maintain but man, I'd eat that 4-5 times a week.
That taco bar.... so good... such an inevitable nightmare trip to the bathroom... but so good. ;)
I used to love the one near where I lived in Kankakee, IL. I remember the pizza being really good, but mainly I think I liked the name. (I've had essential tremor since I was small, so I got called Shakey a lot, myself, growing up.)
A&Ws are still a rather strong brand in Canada. Lots of restauraunts everywhere.
I find the food in the current Long John Silvers' to be as good as I remember.
A lot of Long John Silvers' seem to be hybrid (Yum Foods?) stores now - we have one in Fayetteville NC that is half Long John and half Taco Bell. And last time we went to see my dad in Missouri, we stopped at one in Arkansas that was half Long John, half A&W. :techman:

I still make bell beefers at home sometimes. :)

La Choy used to also have a really good Chinese Barbeque sauce. (Which is weird, because their teriyaki sauce tastes like butt.) Alas, though... gone.

Pepsi bought those old names (A&W, LJS) and combined them with Taco Bells, KFC's, etc.

I like the LJS/KFC combos best because they let you choose from the KFC sides when ordering a LJS family meal.
