Brand new star trek XI trailer... (fan-made)

Bit of a deceptive title but kind of true...

I've made my own trailer for the new star trek movie (been learning video editing on my new macbook)

Since you guys are big fans, i thought you'd be the perfect ones to show and see what you think.

Here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJpSXURQM34

I stripped out the audio, cut out bits i liked from various other trailers. Layed my own audio over the top and adjusted it to fit in with the scenes. Just wish i had a clean (with no background audio) of Leonard Nimoy saying 'Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the star ship enterprise, to boldly go where no man has gone before". To lay over the first bit of the video leading up where it shows the front of the ship.

I'm not a huge fan of star trek, more a casual watching.. Huge fan however of the movies, very much looking forward to this. Always wanted to create my own trailers, being a movie buff.. With my wife due in 2 months, was a good excuse to sneak a macbook purchase passed her 'For editing baby videos'. :)

Oh and Hi  as i'm new here.

Heh, even if you admit its kinda deceptive in the first line, your gonna piss alot of people off with that.

Alot of people.

:)

As for the trailer itself - the music is WAAAAAY too slow for the editing and really doesnt match the tone of the movie (fast paced, action for the masses).

But hey, its not a bad first try, slap some faster music on it (although, still operatic soundtrack, not any form of rock :P) and it wouldnt be a half bad exercise in the art of film trailers. :)

Re: Brand new star trek XI trailer...

Well i figured since i was showing enthusiasm for the movie by making my own trailer, i'd be a little less mawled.. It is new, just not 'offical'. Sorry if this has cheesed anyone off :P

Reason i choose the music is i wanted the film to look less actiony and more poignant. I thought the music fit in quite well - slow build up to the front of the enterprise and loud symbols when the bomb hit the ship... Editing may have been a bit fast tho i agree. I like rapid action over sombre themes tho, but you have a point.

I think it's just the header you used for the thread, maybe you should have included "fan-made" in there, since there are more than plenty fan-made trailers and no one can criticize you for offering your version, you just should have made that clearer that it wasn't an official one.

That said, I think anyone who has the patience and is enthusiastic enough to try, I applaud. I am amazed by the time and effort put into any of these "trailers".

Nice work, looks good.

Well done on the editing too. :bolian:

Re: Brand new star trek XI trailer...

Fair point FanDreaming - If a mod wants to go ahead and add 'fan-made' to the end of the thread title, it would be appreciated. (Didn't realize it would annoy so many people).

Thanks for comments :)

People get excited about new stuff, but don't always like being surprised about what kind of new stuff it is. I've amended the thread title as you suggested.

Pretty nice job on the trailer, though. I think the music you've chosen (is that from V for Vendetta?) works pretty well, matching the transitions in the music to the flow of images. Interesting choices to go with a much less percussive piece of music than the studio's trailers, and to hit the peak where you did and then diminuendo for the last third.

I don't regret clicking the link. Having no dialog was a nice touch, I've heard it all before anyway. Your choice to exclude the dialog allowed me to reflect more on the images. Neat. :bolian:

Thanks M'Sharak / shape-shifter..

Yeah M'Sharak i wanted it to drift off into the silence as the enterprise was getting hit hard (As i thought it was an important moment to reflect on - Does the enterprise get complete destroyed? etc - Leaves viewer guessing), studios tend to go the other way (Loud, Grand). Hope it worked, i like it but everyone has their own preferrence. Also cheers for editing the title

shape-shifter - the only dialog i wanted to include was spock saying the speech at the very beginning, just a shame i couldn't find a clean track of it :(

Come on really??? Piss off alot of people? Why, because they had to click then find out the link was fan made??

Really people...

Hey, Yesterday there was a thread full of people claiming childhoods had been raped when they'd only seen two thirds of a red dwarf special. Sorry for stating what is entirely possible in this place.

Fair enough, I just feel that when it hit the faster action the music was still too slow, although you did say you were going for the emotional impact of the film, something the current official marketing has neglected to mention outside of "Your dad was captain of a starship for twelve minutes..." before we get explosions and Uhura getting naked :p

Red Dwarf? That show was junk... I'd sooner sit through an Earth Final Conflict marathon..

The music does work pretty well in the trailer, though I'd pick a piece that kicked in a little faster at the end of the shot of the Jellyfish.

Not bad. Definitely works without the dialog. And good choice of that V for Vendetta track.
