Both Sides Give Me a Headache

It makes me wonder what they liked about the 1966 show to begin with, or indeed even if they did at all. What the elder show cultivated in me was the desire to look at things from both sides and to try to respect those other opinions without resorting to insults or violence.

I liked the characters in TOS, even when the stories were less than good.
I liked the characters in this movie, even when some things in the story were less than good.

TOS didn't teach me anything or cultivate an attitude. It's just been a lot of fun. It's certainly more intelligent stuff than most crap out there in pop culture. And did I mention I like the characters?

I think the archetype of emotion/logic/realism was what underpinned that show.

Kirk's passion, Spock's dispassion, and McCoy's humanism drove events on many an occasion.

DAMN YOU, BORG, I WANT GENERIC, YOU FOOL!!!

:)

Well, I tried to use zealous precisely. Just means you are very very very very enthusiastic. I'm not. I'm passionate to an extent but... hey, I just would like to have a nice relaxing time here on the boards.

Franklin, well, of course but I first started watching it when I was young and impressionable (not saying you weren't young when YOU watched it, just delving a little into my own background). The fact that they used reason on more than one occasion to work out a problem inspired me. Whether the show justified that inspiration or not, I can't say.

well, I'm enthusiastic, as well. I know this movie isn't the greatest. I just don't like some of the epithets being thrown around at people like me. if you don't do that, I'll play nice.

if you do, my BS-detector goes off. I don't think anyone here is a fool or dumb. we're Trekkies for chrissakes. aren't we all supposed to be Mensa aspirants? ;)

I find that works as well and you save a few bucks... :p

I own each series (except TAS) on DVD, will get a BluRay for this movie and purchase each series on BluRay as it becomes available.

Does that make me... overzealous?

The fact that they used reason on more than one occasion to work out a problem inspired me. Whether the show justified that inspiration or not, I can't say.

They did touch upon issues of the day in several episodes, but not all, and sometimes did so with a sledgehammer.

Still loved it.

Let's face it - this is an internet forum. The threads that get the most discussion are the ones with arguments, because there's only so far you can take "Yes I agree, I enjoyed it but it had it's faults". And the people who argue the most are the fanatics from both sides of the spectrum.

It's the nature of the beast.

I think the movie was fun and well done.

Is that irrational?

I think so. "Fun" is a matter of opinion, but this latest Trek film wasn't well done, any way you choose to spin it. (inconsistent performances, giant plotholes, too much lens flare, etc )

Plot holes I won't argue against, since it is a rare movie that avoids those.

Lens flares--I agree I could've done with fewer, but several were done to great effect, I thought.

I didn't like the one at the very beginning where Captain Badass enters the bridge, for example. Any time they totally obscured the screen I could've done without them.

Performances I thought were stellar all around, frankly, although Nimoy might've come across as... old ... a few times... :p

I think the "passion" of the posters can be a bit off putting, but it is an internet board. It is bound to happen.

I was a member way back and neglected to log in for awhile; because after DS9 went off the air, I did not see the point.

So, of course my old persona was deleted.

I logged in last...month? I was promptly slammed on my first post and felt a little .

But, who cares? It is best to wade in and just ignore if someone feels determined to slam you. (My Two Cents)

I have to say I enjoyed the film, but was not "jazzed" the first go-round. I have watched it 3 times now. I would have to say I liked it better each time.

I have found it helps if I visit the lady's during the Delta Vega beasties scene.

Those for and against have largely fallen into two archetypes, both of which are seriously starting to get on my nerves.

For: OMG, THIS IS THE BEST EVER, ANYONE WHO THINKS OTHERWISE IS A TOTAL LOSER!

Against: THIS VIOLATES CANON, IT IS CRAP!

Rational discourse falls by the wayside and it's hard to get a thought in edgewise.

It's rare to find anyone here that is able to say the movie was fun but it was still badly done (Brutal Strudel does a great job of doing this balancing act).

Anyone else getting a little tired of it all?

I am on another forum where it is the same. The two sides flaming each other with very little serious debate.

I have no problem with people who didn't like the movie, I actually like talking with people disagree, but I think both sides need to be respectful of the others opinions.

My opinion of the movie is moderate and mitigated, but I don't bother to make a post explaining in detail how much I liked or disliked. Threads are rather specific and I participate in specific, mostly appreciative threads. Not necessarily to express only appreciation. My point is, like other moderates, I don't really advertise that. But there might be more of us than you think. Posting is what it is. Usually strong opinions.

And neither side gives me a headache. I don't take it to heart that much. I only read the (hopefully relaxed) threads and posts I'm interested in. :p I enjoyed the movie, but there are more important things in life.

But I don't think badly of the people whose opinions are extreme for so much. Passion is okay.

Finally, thank God for generic, because I do get headaches. I better leave this thread which is more boring and likely to induce a headache than I expected. There is more fun to be had with the OMGs. And even with the OMG SHITs!
