Borrowing library books

When I was a kid, we were too poor for me to buy a lot of books-- I had to save my lunch money and go hungry just to buy comics-- so I borrowed a huge number of books from the library. Usually this one:

I would love to live in that building. :D

These days I buy all my books-- more than I have time to read-- and subscribe to about a hundred magazines. My apartment is an Old Curiosity Shop of books piled everywhere. In the next couple of years I must buy a house, just so I'll have room for my books. :rommie:

The library is one of the most beautiful products of our society. I know that sounds cheesy, but think about it, really think about it: It is in action and as a symbol the very best we as a society have to offer. It is the idea that knowledge and truth are things that everyone deserves and to which all should have equal access. The library is proof of our freedom. Seriously. The literate and learned have the power, and as so long as literature and learning are made available to the public the public remains free.
Well said. :bolian:

Oh, it is. It's fantastic on the inside, too. Big fireplace and everything.

Amazing. They just don't dedicate lovely old buildings like that as libraries, not in my borough anyway. We get modern glass and steel ones if we're lucky. Otherwise, just a standard 50 or so year old tired little building.

I borrow the majority of books I read from the library.I usually borrow the non-fiction books, mainly history.

I buy most of my books from a used book store.I will hardly buy new books unless it's something I really want.

used to borrow bnooks from the libary but kept forgetting to return them on time so in the end i ended up buying books more then borrowing them

I used to use the library all the time, especially when my kids were much younger than they are now. These days though, not so much.

I read too much for buying to be practical. These days I try to limit purchases to books that I am fairly confident I will read more than once or refer to in the future. That, and books I love and wish to force friends to read.

it looks like one of the Carnegie libraries.

^^ I'll have to look those up later.

Sounds glorious.. I would have a hard time leaving..
It actually dates back to the late 1800s. It's currently undergoing renovations, so it's closed; hopefully they will restore it and not modernize it.

There should be some sort of protection for such gorgeous old-world architecture... just so they don't demolish it at some point to make way for a parking lot. You never know what crap the state might pull for money.

Actually, I think it does have protected historical status, so there's probably a limit to how much 'modernizing' they can do. :)

For your classic literature, the Library is fine. For relaxation, it's fine, except if you like to read Star Trek novels (which they have only a few of). For keeping up with the newest developments in the digital world? Not a chance. Everything the library has, and lots more, you can find on the internet (yes, even those classic books).

So no, I've hardly been to the library these past 10 years.

I would be broke if we didn't use the library. We do, and often. In fact this weekend we went 3 times. My daughter devours books like i do and between us we probably read 10 books over the last three days. Needless to say it was a lazy weekend. It also goes without saying that my eyes are a little bloodshot right now.

As to my local library, they don't carry a ton of books but with inter library loans i get them delivered to my library within days.

I love owning books too, and have over 7000(i counted them a few years ago)of my own, so i also have no problems buying them..or even making it past a book store without stopping.

I grew up going to libraries all the time. When I lived in Italy, my goal was to visit the library on every American base in Italy, a goal which I finally accomplished my last year there.

During the summer, I usually hit the libaries quite hard, I don't work during the summer and in an attempt to spend less money, I usually go and spend hours at the library reading various books. Saves me a lot of money.
