Borg are back? (spoilers)

I finished reading Seven Deadly Sins on January 1, 2011.

Gluttony ended with three Borg warping off in a Borg modified Starfleet vessel. Does this mean that the Borg will be back and are not gone for good?

^It means that the author of that particular story chose to offer a mechanism for a potential Borg return. Whether future authors or editors are interested in picking up on that thread remains to be seen.

Doesn't Gluttony take place years before the Destiny trilogy?

^The Historian's note from the book:

This story takes place in early 2380 (ACE) after the fall of the Romulan Star Empire (Star Trek Nemesis) and concurrent with the Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) encountering the former Starship Einstein (Star Trek: The Next Generation - Greater than the Sum).
So while it isn't set years before Destiny, it is set before Destiny, meaning that the SDS Borg should have been transformed, too.

^Good point. I'd forgotten that it was set before Destiny.

That historian's note is in error, though, since Greater Than the Sum takes place in late 2380 (to be precise, its encounter with the Einstein is in November '80). I'm also at a loss as to why the author of that note chose to assert that Revenant was concurrent with GTTS, because there's nothing in the actual novella to suggest any link.

I don't know, maybe it was a last minute addition (explaining the mix-up with the date) to make clear that those Borg were also transformed and to avoid questions like the one posed in this thread.

No, I just skimmed through the story, and the internal references make no mention of Destiny, only of canonical events. So I think it was intended either to come before Destiny or to stand apart in its own continuity.

“The Borg are finished,” Walsh scoffed, trying to break the spell cast by the mere mention of their name. “No more conduits, no more jumping out of the Delta Quadrant.”

“According to Starfleet,” Locarno cautioned. “Do you really believe they told everyone the full story, Evan?”

The above quote is what makes me think this really takes place after Destiny.

At the end of monster movies, we usually see that at least one whatever has survived, potentially setting everything in motion again - even if the film in question never actually gets a sequel. So you could probably take the story in question (which I haven't read) as an epilogue if you so chose.

No, that's a reference to the end of Voyager when they blew up the conduits & transwarp hub.

Right. The line "No more conduits, no more jumping out of the Delta Quadrant" makes it clear that the Borg still exist in the DQ but have no way (supposedly) of reaching the Federation. There's no way that such a line would be uttered after Destiny.

It's been a while since I finished reading this, but I came away from it with the strong impression that it was written to take place after Destiny, but then the editor told the author that they didn't want to "bring back the Borg" per se, so the Historian's Note was added. Just my impression.

The bits about Starfleet destroying Borg artifacts on site is something we didn't have before Destiny. I'd expect that to be a directive given after Destiny. So I agree with sfroth that Gluttony was probably written to take place after Destiny but had the historian's not added in like it was just to not be after Destiny. This just feels like it's after Destiny, not before.

As the books don't need to conform to each other as has been said by (I'm sure) Christopher on the odd occasion, this story was probably based in it's own timeline, one where the events of Destiny never occurred.

Post by the author in this thread back in June:

Hi, guys! I'm glad you enjoyed my contribution to the Seven Deadly Sins. You certainly hit it on the head when you describe it as a horror story--that's exactly the vibe I was going for, and I'm happy that came through.

In answer to some of the questions, "Revenant" isn't directly tied to any other TREK lit. Marco Palmieri did send me an outline of DESTINY so that I could keep the story current with that series, but that was about it.

As to who snagged Harlow down in the hellhole, that was actually Carson. As she hinted later when she got caught, she needed to accelerate assimilation of the crew before Starfleet got there.

And about ending--I deliberately kept that a little vague because I saw a real possibility in continuing the storyline, if Pocket chooses to do so. The idea of a rampaging new Borg species tearing up the galaxy seeking revenge was too juicy to resist. If you like that idea too, drop a line to Pocket or post around and let the editors know. It would be loads of fun to expand the idea into a full-length novel.

Cheers!

Except there are no Borg artifacts after Destiny. Everything Borg became Caeliar or was dusted.

I'd assume a policy of destroying Borg artifacts would've been put in place after the events of Homecoming/The Farther Shore.

Borg back? Oh God no...

I certainly hope not. If they ever show up again, Destiny effectively becomes moot!

I agree. Destiny seemed to pretty well infer that all Borg everywhere were affected by the Caeliar. Even former Borg like Seven and Picard were affected to some degree, so I would assume that any independent Borg cut off from the main Collective would have been subject to the Caeliar transformation as well.

I expect an April fool's day announcement that the Borg are coming back. It will probably end with a random comment about Janeway returning and/or Harry Kim going back to being an ensign.
