Apparently they are trying to mimic the "Paranormal Activity" model and hope that lack of theatre distribution will somehow cause enraged fans in the tens of thousands to "demand" the movie be shown.

This is ridiculous. They have the budget for this. SHOW THE MOVIE. Trying to get free advertising by manipulating the market like this is cheap and stupid and it won't work.

--Danoz, vent out.

Yeah, its pretty annoying. I had plans to see it with people on friday....just to discover that they aren't showing it anywhere within a 200 mile radius. Good job sony!

It's in such limited release, it's only being released in TV & Media around here. ;)

Fair move...

Now Boondock fans can be marginalized even more!

GAAAAH!!! :brickwall:

;). Anybody else looking to see this when it finally gets a wider distribution net?

To be fair, the first one was a resounding thud at the box office, and a critical bomb. It only made money on DVD and took ten years to eventually stir (someone's) interest in a sequel. The second one has earned even worse notices from critics. I don't blame the distributor from approaching the release with caution. It'll probably earn more money per screen that way.

^^^ Not sure how that's possible, as it was never theatrically released - it was scheduled for showing in theaters the week after Columbine happened. The release was pulled due to the movie's violent/vigilante nature, it being so soon after the attacks. There may have been a couple of theaters that had prints and never got the memo not to show it, resulting in an -extremely- limited viewing - legitimizing some claims as a box office failure - which isn't really fair in the grand scheme of things. It went straight to video a couple years later. As a video release it did fairly well.

Not quite true. It was released in a five theatre limited run in 1999. After one week, it was pulled from its domestic run. It was, by any measure, a financial failure. It did make money on DVD, which I indicated originally.
