Spoilers Bonus scene from Season One Finale

Had a feeling those badges were associated with S31. Will be interesting to see if they follow up on that, or if the exclusion of that scene meant that they've changed their minds about including it in DIscovery.

I liked this scene because we actually see a Trill. They finally referenced something from DS9 that wasn't section 31.
Except he's not a Trill. Georgiou calls him out on this and he turns off his holographic spots. We did see a Trill in the finale though.

Well, Section 31 recruited an Augment (Bashir) an Augment despot (Khan) and now a despot from the mirror universe. Seems to fit. :D

But I really hope the black badge don't identify its wearer openly as a Section 31 member but is instead just the emblem of a special security unit which is a cover of Section 31. Just like the Kelvin Memorial Archive was a cover for their weapon development program.

I think this is a case of no-one knowing what to do about those black badges once episode 3 was finished, and the writers reading fan-theories about section 31 on the Internet (NCC-1031, black badges) and liking them so much they decided to incorporate them - even though it makes no logical sense in the story.

Filming was all but finished by the time episode 3 aired. They were pretty deep into the finale.

Wow. Cool scene. Now I know we were all right when we guessed what those black badges were way back.
Don't know how I feel about all this but it's obviously going to be a story line coming up. And it's very-DS9 too.

That's right. Filming for season one was finished only eleven days after episode 3 was released. They don't need fan theories to give them ideas to do stuff like this.

This scene just confirmed
Trip Tucker is alive and he and Pippa will go on fabulous clandestine adventures together

Is this going to be part of a storyline or just a deleted scene? I like that it gives Georgiou a purpose but I'm kinda over Section 31.

I wonder if this was meant to be the last scene of the final episode before they decided to do the Enterprise one. It even has a musical score, and a nice one too. I also noticed that the Clint Howard character appears at the beginning of this scene, seems to be still high.

I'm sure they might claim that, but there is no reason to believe them.

Section 31's very existence - operating outside the law, under no restrictions whatsoever, answerable to no one but themselves - is an invitation for abuse. It's the very definition of dictatorship.

Of course Section 31 wants power - how could they NOT want it? They literally do whatever they want, whenever they feel like doing it. And if they determine that you are a threat, you are eliminated - you have no rights, no recourse, no defense whatsoever. What is that, if NOT an attempt at absolute domination?

You can't protect ideals by violating them.

Who cares what they think? They're simply WRONG.

Oh, I absolutely agree with you!
Section 31 is wrong on all accounts. But they are interesting villains, because they don't work an a clichéd "Make the Empire great again" lunatism for galactic domination. They think of themselves as the "ends justifies the means"-guys. The ones protecting civilisation by uncivilised means, because they can't do that themselves.
They are wrong of course. Evel. Amorale. But their reasoning and their goals make them interesting. They are Jack Nicholsons' character from "A few good men". They are the types of assholes that ran the secret U.S. torutre program, and still run the drone assasination program on countries they deem as "barbaric". They are superstitous assholes incarnated. But there are SO. MANY. PEOPLE. agreeing with this kind of logic - just look at how many Americans still try to defend the torture of muslims as a viable way to fight extremism - even in our "civilised", well educated western world. This topic is SO current, this "protecting the innocent by doing shady-stuff"-thinking needs to be thoroughly evaulated, debated and debunked. I just don't trust the current writing team to be capable to think such a plotline through to the end...

I think they had no idea what the black badges were and came up with this idea after. Whatever, I've passed the point where I expect things to make sense so it's ok with me. It's kinda cool.

I wonder why Georgiou only thinks humans can be Federation members.

Not with the amount of people (execs and lawyers) something like the black badges and Section 31 would need to go through in order to be approved. I'm sure Viacom had to give an okay too.

Wow. A bonus scene released a month and a half after the season ends finally tackles the Black Badges. I'm kind of surprised at all the negative reactions going on in this thread. Given all the fanwank that's already gone on in the first season, did anyone seriously not expect Section 31 to ever show up?
That is fucking dumb.

That isn't how S31 operates. They don't have 'badges'.

Unless something happens before DS9 that causes them to go deeper underground.
"It's a retcon."

Bonus scene not deleted scene.

It's a bonus scene that's canon, and part of a Season 2 announcement that Section 31, new character Leland and presumably Mirror Georgiou are part of Season 2.

I love synonyms.

Still not a reason to allow yourself to lose control of your mind.

I hated the idea of a Klingon War show, and ended up enjoying S1 more than any other previous spin-off Trek's inaugural season. I now hate the idea of a Section 31 element to the show...but I'll probably end up enjoying the hell out of that too, so I'll keep my mental faculties firmly under control.

Besides, Michelle Yeoh.
