"Bond 23" Announced!

Giant death laser isn't cooler, it's stupid. It's completely unbelievable.

And why are they trying to take over the world? Seriously, if Austin Powers made fun of it, it shouldn't be in a Bond movie.

In a few decades water will probably be one of the world's most valuable resourses, and not just in the third world either. I liked Quantum's plan, it was big crazy and nefarious enough without being completely implausible.

Anyway, this would indeed mark Peter Morgan's first non-historical scriptwriting assignment, I do believe. Part of the reason why I find his hiring fascinating.

No, he wrote a rubbish TV series about university students about ten years ago and did a quite good miniseries about a young Sikh man on trial for murder about five years ago. EDIT: Full list of his works on IMDb

Anyway, if he's helping write this new film, he's got his work cut out. Casino Royale was garbage and Quantum of Solace only marginally less so.

Still, it's a JAMES BOND movie. It's not something like Syriana.

I was also pretty sure that Elliot Carver DID want ratings in TND for his media empire. He wanted a big war between the UK and China, which he could then cover with his media empire. It was a dumb, dumb reason to start a war.

TND was such a silly movie but in the good Bond Way ;) Carver was a great madman.

It's doubtful they'll ever make Devil May Care as a film, yes the Living Daylights focussed on Afghanistan and the drugs trade. Likely this would have a slightly different perspective as back then (as in Rambo 3) it was more about evil Russians and heroic Muhadajeen (sp!) Licence to Kill probably dealt with the drugs trade more directly.

Elliot Carver: 'And this missile will be launched towards Beijing, where General Chang has already called an emergency meeting of the Chinese High Command. Unfortunately, the general will be stuck in traffic and the missile will already hit the compound. However, the general will be too late to stop the Chinese Air Force form sinking the Royal fleet. He will then negotiate a truce, and emerge as a world leader with the Nobel Peace Prize!'

Wai Lin: 'And what do you get in return?'

Elliot Carver: 'Oh, me? Nothing. Just exclusive broadcasting rights in China for the next hundred years.'

I really like The Living Daylights, and thought a lot of the ice magic in Die Another Day was ripped right from it. Strangely, I'm seeing the Brosnan pictures on the Sci Fi Channel a lot recently. I'm watching Tomorrow Never Dies now in fact. What gives? Bond is not Bourne and he certainly isn't sci-fi! I hate Moonraker!

I'm warming to Daniel Craig. I don't love him as Bond yet, but I certainly like him better than Clive Owen. Owen's had every chance to steal a picture like Children of Men and Elizabeth the Golden Age. Instead he's just meh to me. I just wish the next picture lightens up. The environmental mishmash in QofS was too broad to care, so I think they learned their lesson about all the realism. Just add the Bondisms back in 23 and I'll be happy.

I have to ponder more on QofS before I do my review!

^ I seem to recall that NBC/Universal has the rights to the televised airings now. They need to show them somewhere :).

What drove me nuts about Quantum of Solace is that it was never fun in the kind of escapist way that all James Bond movies are supposed to be fun. Too often the film would remind us of shitty world situations. We're running out of oil. Our governments are constantly making backroom deals with dodgy underworld figures. Etc. I wasn't too fond of Casino Royale either but at least it wasn't so grim.

Exactly.
Escapist entertainment.
If I wanted 'real world' events/situations I'd just flip around the cable news outlets.

I think it's high time they incorporated elements from the animated James Bond Jr. into the movies.

At least make Walker D. Plank the villain in the next movie...leader of pirates. Bond vs. Pirates = GOLD.

The difference between Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace is that Casino Royale still felt like a Bond movie to me. It struck a good enough balance between the old and the new and Craig's performance was great. Quantum of Suckatude resembled the Bond films in no way as it was a pathetic attempt to copy the Bourne films. Basically, it sucked all the joy and fun out of the James Bond franchise so it could shoot a generic spy movie. Craig's moody, thug-like Bond was very unappealing in this one as well.

Remember that massive dam we saw at the end of Suckatude? In Bond films past, we would have seen that thing bust at the end. That could have been a great scene.

I thought Casino Royale was too far to Bourne, too, so in a strange way, I kind of accepted the generic action in QofS. It has four chases of all transportations. The action is certainly good, but it certainly would have been better yes if it lightened up. Crack a joke on the plane, play the music, bag the babe in the cave afterwards. How are you supposed to know when Bond does something cool if there's no music?

They do play the music, it's just sublte- examples off the top of my head would be Bond getting off the baot and offloading Camile to the busboy (which I thought was funny!) and Bond jumping the banister to avoid the MI6 agents after talking to M later on.

Yes the last James Bond didn't have enough sex, I was surprised with how little sex it had.

I liked the movie for the action, I was bored away with CR. However at times it was over the top even for James Bond.

This thread tells me that CR has not lived up to repeat viewings on DVD. Its actually shown to many now what some of us knew when it debuted....Craigs Bond is just not Bond enough.

QoS just sucks out right and more people saw that on first viewing. I can only imagine what a repeat of it will do ones opinion.

nuBond can't have sex too often. Being sexually aggressive would make him threatening and scare off the female audience.
